Can the Purdue Boilermakers build off of a solid season or will they back slide? This 2007 Purdue Boilermakers college basketball picks and betting preview tells all. Purdue went 22-12 last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. Its 22 victories totaled six more than it had won in the two previous years combined. The Boilermakers depended heavily on their two senior leaders last season to make the turnaround. This year’s team will be without Carl Landry’s 18.9 points per game and David Teague’s 14.3 points per contests. Without these two proven scorers the Boilermakers are going to back slide some this season and their postseason will likely be the NIT and not the NCAA Tournament. The fact that Purdue brought in a recruiting class regarded as one of the country’s ten best will help speed up the rebuilding process. Expect to hear the name E’Twaun Moore called often this season. The guard from East Chicago, Indiana heads this talented class. Gordon Watt returns as a 33-game starter last season. He may have trouble keeping his starting job with the talent coming in, but he is expected to see a lot of minutes once again as head coach Matt Painter loves this guys toughness. The 6’10’’ JaJuan Johnson is extremely talented in the center spot, but he is still lacking the strength it will take to really dominate. Robbie Hummel and Scott Martin played alongside each other at Valpo High in Indian last year. They are both promising prospects and Painter especially likes Martin’s ability to use his left hand. The backcourt houses Purdue’s lone senior, point guard Tarrance Crump. Expect him to show lots of improvement as last year was just his first season of D-1 hoops. Chris Kramer could be Purdue’s star in progress. As a frosh, he was one of the best defensive players in the Big Ten with 63 thefts. He finished second only to Ohio State’s Mike Conley with 2.10 steals per game. He averaged 7.2 points per game last season and we can expect him to be in double figures this year. As I mentioned earlier, Moore is the player to watch for in the backcourt. The 6’3’’ combo guard led his high school to the state title last season in the state of Indian’s biggest class. Many feel this kid is Purdue top recruit since Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson. Give these youngsters a season to mature and they’ll have Purdue back in the Big Dance. But for this season, the losses of Landry and Teague are likely too much to overcome. SoCal is selling out of Orange Juice and Miracle Whip with the arrival of O.J. Mayo. Can this sensational frosh lift the Trojans to the big dance? Jimmy has your answer in his 2007 USC Trojans betting preview . Jimmy picked the Trojans to finish 7th in the preseason and if they do, they will, by far, be the best seventh place finisher in the country. Mayo has already emerged as the go-to guy on this team and Tim Floyd’s slow-down brand of basketball ,with an emphasis on defense, will have USC capable of beating anyone in the country. USC finished 25-12 last season and emerged to the Sweet 16--one of the better seasons in school history. With three double digit scorers not returning, USC was expected to take a hit, but Tim Floyd has made his team buy into a strict, patient offensive approach to have them ready for another tourney run. Taj Gibson is the Trojans’ top returning scorer averaging 12.2ppg and 8.7rpg as a freshman. The 6’9’’ forward from Brooklyn should be even more polished this season and won’t have to share the ball as much with the departure of Pruitt, Stewart, and Young. The most used slogan on the USC campus this year will not be “can you pass the mayo”, but “can you pass it to Mayo”? Mayo can do it all and plays with no fear. Daniel Hackett will be seeing some minutes next to Mayo. He really came on strong in the NCAA Tourney last season. There is no question that Tim Floyd was the right guy for this USC job. He has revitalized this football-minded school in just two seasons and was there ever a doubt? After all, this guy made Iowa State a team in the Big 12 that could contend with Kansas during his stay there. It’s going to be difficult for Floyd to match last season’s 25-win effort with the tough schedule that was devised with the thinking that Pruitt and Young would still be around. The NCAA Tourney is more or less a guarantee however, and we can expect the recruits to keep coming with all the national exposure that Mayo will provide for this program. We expect USC to be a solid against the spread pick in Pac-10 play as the loss of three prominent players will have oddsmakers undervaluing them against the likes of the league’s elite. Tim Floyd’s conservative approach also makes the Trojans a solid Unders play. Bet on College Basketball at Sportsbetting.com View College Basketball Betting Odds now at OnlineSportsHandicapping.com!

The Nets have struggled of late losing 5 of their last 6 games SU and ATS. The Kings have lost 4 of their last 6 games SU but have gone 3-3 ATS in that span. Not that the Wildcats have had much success during Bill Carmody’s reign as head coach, but it is apparent that the ‘cats regressed last season. Find out if Northwestern can show signs of improvement in our 2007 Northwestern Wildcats betting preview. Last season’s two Big Ten wins were the fewest in Bill Carmody’s seven seasons at Northwestern and last season marked the first time in his tenure that he did not beat a ranked opponent. Carmody squarely blamed last season’s lack of success on a lack of talent. I can’t say I don’t agree. It’s hard to win when players shoot as poorly as his did from the field. However, Carmody may want to think about changing to a different style of offense if the Princeton-style does not suit his personnel. All the same, Carmody will be asked to close the gap in the Big Ten with essentially the same personnel as last season. Any hope for a surprise season, and by surprise I mean one good enough to result in a NIT appearance, rests in the hands of Kevin Coble. The 6’8’’ wing man finished third in the Big Ten in scoring among freshmen last year at 13.4 points per game. His 190-pound frame could use some more beef and if he can take his fluid mid-range game behind the arc as well, the ‘cats will have a player who can cause serious matchup problems. The backcourt players are going to have to stroke it better from the perimeter. A Princeton-style offense cannot work when the team running it is shooting barely above 30 percent from three-point range. Hopefully, freshman Michael Thompson can fill the point guard spot to open up shooters like Craig Moore and Jason Okrzesik. Moore suffered a shooting slump last season after being selected for the Big Ten All-Freshman team the previous year. He has to knock down shots for Northwestern to be effective. Perimeter shooting and rebounding will likely fail this team again this season. I think improvement is inevitable, but not enough to make any postseason play. It comes as no surprise that the oddsmakers have picked the Wildcats to finish dead last in the Big Ten this season by a healthy margin. I think the Wildcats will surprise some teams this season though. It may not show up in the win column, but it should against the spread. Look to take the Wildcats as big underdogs in the right spots. Jeff's college basketball picks will show you the way all season long. Remember, just because a team is supposed to be bad doesn’t mean that they won’t be an asset against the number. Minneapolis is excited about Gophers basketball with Tubby Smith coming to town in 2007. Find out if Smith will be able to make an immediate impact in our 2007 Minnesota Golden Gophers betting preview. Here’s the good news for Minnesota. Tubby Smith has won at least 20 ball games in each of the past 14 seasons. During that span, Smith collected a national title, four elite eight appearances and nine Sweet 16’s. Minnesota, who has only one NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999, is hoping Tubby can bring some of his success with him. With a big name coach now installed, the Gophers should start to gain some respect after Smith gets a few recruiting classes under his belt. Currently, oddsmakers have the Gophers picked to finish next to last in the Big Ten Conference this season. Minnesota’s frontcourt houses a pair of double digit scorers in Dan Coleman and Spencer Tollackson. While both seemingly have potential, neither player plays with any grit or toughness to separate them from other inside guys in the league. Smith will be trying to bring out that grit this season. The backcourt features Minnesota’s leading scorer from a season ago, Lawrence McKenzie. The senior averaged 14.9 points per game. He’s going to need some more help this season if Minnesota wants to start making a turnaround. Kevin Payton cannot average nearly five turnovers per game and Lawrence Westbrook is going to have to be a more complete player-doing more than just hunting his own shot. The Gophers are hoping that freshman Blake Hoffarber can strengthen this unit. He was a lights out shooter in high school and a winner as well. I didn’t think Minnesota had a chance to get a guy like Tubby Smith. That could prove to be the program's best move in history before it's all said and done. Only time will tell if Smith can succeed in this rebuilding job. Currently the Gophers are giving up quite a bit of talent to the top half of the league, but I’m optimistic that Smith will begin to get top recruits. Minnesota won just 9 games all of last season and endured 22 losses. The Gophers only recorded three Big Ten wins. Seven of the guys on the current roster are from Minnesota and that kind of recruiting has not been getting the job done. Perhaps, Smith can bring some boys from the south up to the land of 10,000 lakes and make Minnesota an elite Big Ten team. Going against the Gophers will be a very profitable bet for you money line guys this season, especially in Big Ten play. Make going against Minnesota a regular part of your college basketball betting repertoire.
