College Football: Miami Hurricanes 2008 ACC PreviewLast season the Miami Hurricanes failed to make a college football bowl game.  First year coach, Randy Shannon was forgiven by fans, but it better not happen again this season.  There is a lot of work to be done for the Hurricanes this year, as they only return 4 starters on offense and 4 on defense.  The bright side is that recruiting has been excellent and Miami will look to have a great season in the college football ACC division.  Currently college football oddsmakers at SportBetting.com have the Miami Hurricanes at +350 odds to win the 2008 ACC this year.

The big strength for the Hurricanes this season is all the fresh talent that they went out and got.  Miami is said to be the top 5 teams in the college football recruiting class.  Many of the freshmen had plenty of time to adjust to the team and they will look to make big impacts this upcoming year.  Usually depending on freshman is not a good idea, but other players will return to anchor the team.  The Hurricanes will return linebackers Sean Spence and Arthur Brown, as well as defensive tackle Marcus Forston.  Miami will also rely on a couple of quality running backs to carry the team in Graig Cooper and Javarris James.  They produced most of the Miami offense last year and will look to be even more productive this season.  Right now the Miami Hurricanes are listed at 35:1 odds at SportsBetting.com to win the BCS National Championship.

The rest of the Miami offense did rather poorly and will need to replace several players.  Freshman quarterback Robert Marve has looked very impressive, but is battling with Jacory Harris for the job.  Either way it may be a problem as both QB’s are very inexperienced.  The loss of wide receiver Darnall Jenkins and Lance Leggett will not help either.  Miami was ranked last in the conference in 2007 is passing offense, which has been a big problem for them.  It is going to be interesting to see how the Miami Hurricanes will adjust this year, but I expect them to surprise a lot of teams.

College Football: Maryland Terrapins 2008 ACC Preview

College Football: Maryland Terrapins 2008 ACC PreviewThe head coach of the Maryland Terrapins, Ralph Friedgen has done a lot for his team.  He was his own offensive coordinator for the past two years, but now the job has been filled.  The job has been handed to James Franklin who was most recently with Kansas State.  His first task will be to find a new quarterback to man the Maryland Terrapin offense.  Jordan Steffy got the start last season, but them got hurt and had to be replaced by Chris Turner.  To be honest, neither of them did particularly well.  This means the battle will begin again for the starter’s job.  Maryland will need to resolve this big issue if they want to compete in the ACC.  Currently Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Maryland Terrapins at +400 odds to win the ACC.

No matter who will run Maryland, they will still have many dangerous weapons to work with.  The Terrapins have a cord of wide receivers that may just be the best in the ACC.  It consists of Darrius Heyward-Bey, Isaiah Williams, LaQuan Williams and Danny Oguendo.  However they will need someone to toss them the ball if they want to be successful.  Another thing that works in Maryland’s favor is their offensive line.  Injures were a huge problem last season, but those injuries have now passed and this leaves them with a great line with tons of experience.  They are currently listed at 100:1 odds at Sportbook.com to win the BCS National Championship.

The Terrapins will need to recover with some big losses all over the defensive end.  Linebacker Erin Henderson is gone as well as the departures of Isaiah Gardner, J.J Justice and Christian Varner in the secondary.  Maryland will need to fill these gaps.  They are moving end Jeremy Navarre, who led the team with 5.5 sacks last season into the middle to fill the hole.  The bottom line will be that everyone will need to work hard.  The potential is there for the Maryland Terrapin, they just need to execute.

College Football: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2008 ACC Odds Preview

College Football: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2008 ACC PreviewThis 2008 upcoming college football season, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will look to improve in the ACC.  Last year they went 7-6 and were 4-4 in the ACC.  They lost in the Humanitarian Bowl to Fresno State by a score of 28-40.  Coach Paul Johnson will look to improve the Georgia Tech system.  The offense will look different this year, and the main question will be how long it’s going to take the Yellow Jackets to adjust to the new style.  They are always a threat, and look to make their mark in the ACC this year.  Currently the college football oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at +1200 odds to win the ACC.

One of Georgia Tech’s biggest strengths is their defense.  They ranked first in the nation is sacks last year and only allowed 114.5 rushing yards a game.  A lot of the defensive players who made this happen are gone, but two key pieces return in tackles Vance Walkers and Darryl Richard.  Walker led the Yellow Jackets with 8.5 sacks.  Richard also added 4.5 sacks of his own as well as 11.5 tackles for a loss.  These two players are going to anchor the defense, which looks to get back into prime form.  They will need to build around this duo for the future as I don’t think they can really content for the BCS National Championship this year.  Right now they are listed at 100:1 odds to win the BCS National Title.

Starting quarterback Taylor Bennett transferred schools, so the Yellow Jackets are going to break in a new signal caller.  Georgia Tech will have 2 options in Josh Nesbitt and Calvin Booker.  Nesbitt looked more impressive during the spring and will likely get the start.  Both QB’s can run the ball very well and fit into the system.  There have not been many receiving options for the Yellow Jackets, so it looks like we will see a lot of running.  The bottom line is that there is just not enough talent here to go anywhere just yet.

College Football: Florida State Seminoles 2008 ACC Preview

College Football: Florida State Seminoles 2008 ACC PreviewAt the start of the new college football season the Florida State Seminoles will be missing some key players because of an academic scandal that emerged late last season.  However they will be playing some rather weak teams and it will not be that big of deal.  Florida will get the chance to play some players that might not have been given a chance.  These players will gain some well needed experience and will also get to show themselves off to possibly gain a starting role on the team.  The Seminoles will be looking to make a name for themselves, after having back to back 7-6 seasons.  They need something to happen in 2008.  Currently the college football oddsmakers at BodogLife.com have the Florida State Seminoles at +450 odds to win the ACC.

Even without some key players in this years upcoming college football season, it’s going to be the Seminoles defense that will keep them moving along.  They have a strong secondary which will return cornerbacks Partick Robinson and Tony Carter.  They combined for 10 interceptions last season and played excellent.  If you add Myron Rolle to the mix, who has started 23 consecutive games heading into the new season, then this makes for a great combo on defense.  Middle linebacker Derek Nicholson led Florida in tackles last season and will lead the charge.  It’s going to be tough for the Seminoles to go deep this year on defense alone.  Currently they are listed at 50:1 odds to win the BCS National Championship.

As it seems every year, the offense is going to be a big concern for the Seminoles.  Quarterback Drew Weatherford is now a senior and he is going to need to live up to expectations and really step it up this year.  The Seminoles seems to have a pretty fair schedule so they should be able to improve from last year.  Florida needs to show some signs of past glory if they want any shot of doing well this upcoming season.

College Football: Duke Blue Devils 2008 ACC Preview

College Football: Duke Blue Devils 2008 ACC PreviewHere we are again, as every few years there seems to be some excitement about Duke Blue Devil’s football when a coach is fired and a new one is hired.  The new man for the job is David Cutcliffe.  He hopes that his stay will be long.  Cutcliffe has a good pro style of offense and he should be able to utilize Duke’s strengths against opponent’s weaknesses, even without the athletes to match.  The Blue Devil’s don’t really have a realistic shot at coming close to winning the ACC, but they will put their best foot forward as always.  Last season they were a terrible 1-11 and were 0-8 in the ACC.  Don’t look for things to change much this season.  Currently Oddsmakers at SportsBetting.com have the Duke Blue Devils at +10000 odds to win the ACC.

There are a couple lone bright spots for the Blue Devils heading into the new season.  They will return junior quarterback Thaddeus Lewis who now has 2 years of experience under his belt.  He has a decent arm and a surprising amount of accuracy.  Last season he led Duke with 2430 passing yards and will get a fresh new offense this season.  Also retuning is Eron Riley, who caught 40 passes for 830 yards and 9 touchdowns.  These 2 will make a great combo and have to carry the offensive load for Duke.  They are listed at 25:1 odds at SportsBetting.com in the field option, to win the BCS National Championship.

Duke will need to address their offensive line issues.  They allowed 44 sacks last year.  Three starters are back on the line including Cameron Goldberg who spent most of the season suspended for breaking team rules.  There is some decent young talent out their, but nobody is expecting a miracle season just yet.  Duke's lack of team defense and lack of a running attack is a big problem for them.  The Blue Devils will need to improve here to have a decent season.
