The College Football Heisman Trophy will go to Darren McFadden or Tim Tebow (11-25-2007)
The list of College Football Heisman Trophy candidates has been getting bigger by the week with new favorites popping up like jack-in-the-box. Now it seems the early season favorite, Arkansas’ junior running-back Darren Mcfadden, whom faded at mid-season, has made a resurgence back to the top of the heap. However, he is joined up there with Florida’s sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow and rightfully so.

As far as the College Football Heisman race goes, Week-13 provided quite a show as the top contenders made turn three and headed for the finish line. While we are a week away from knowing who impressed voters the most, the majority of us have begun taking up sides with either McFadden or Tebow.

Thursday night I told a media colleague I thought McFadden would win the Heisman Trophy if he helped Arkansas beat No.1 LSU and put up monster numbers in the process. The young man from Little Rock did not disappoint. He rushed for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns, with 132 of the yards coming from the quarterback position. He also completed 3-of-6 passes for 34 yards and another touchdown. All of this against arguably the best defense in the land and the best college football team in the country.

On the season, McFadden rushed for 1725 yards on 304 attempts and scored 15 touchdowns. He received 21 passes for 164 yards and 1 touchdown. His critics say McFadden didn’t perform consistently all year. To a degree that is true because he suffered from bruised ribs and wasn’t as effective through much of October. But putting up 1725 yards on any season is not exactly chopped liver.

Tebow’s name was mentioned early as a possibility; however has had a late season run of successful performances ending with a spectacular showing Saturday against rival Florida State in Gainsville. The Gators' quarterback threw three touchdown passes, ran for two scores and carried 12th-ranked Florida to a 45-12 victory over the Seminoles. Tebow led the Gators to touchdowns on four of their first five possessions.

Tebow, a man-child at quarterback, attempted 317 passes, completing 217 of them for 3132 yards and 29 touchdowns while only being intercepted 6 times. Tebow rushed 194 times for 838 yards and scored 22 touchdowns.

While the list of hopefuls is long, there is no need to be thinking about the others as great as they are. Its time to focus on who will win the trophy and from this perspective it will be McFadden or Tebow and they are locked in a dead heat.
