Proud Spell digs in to win the Alabama Stakes at SaratogaWhat a duel down the stretch in the 128th running of the Alabama Stakes on Saturday between Proud Spell and Music Note.  At the end it was Proud Spell who prevailed by a head to beat the 2-5 favorite Music Note.  Proud Spell, broke well from the gate and went out to challenge Music Note's entry-mate, on the lead.  Jockey Gabriel Saez, then just stalked from second around the race track behind Music Note, around the final turn Saez made the lead with Proud Spell quickly and then rider Javier Castellano of Music Note quickly took over second and made a run at the lead.  The two fillies battled down the stretch with Proud Spell prevailing by a head over Music Note.

After the race, yhe trainer of Proud Spell said "This filly of ours had never been passed down the stretch the entire time we've had her,''.  Proud Spell now added another stakes victory to her record as she has won the Kentucky Oaks, Delaware Oaks, and Fair Grounds Oaks.  "I told Gabriel, 'Do not let Music Note in front,' '' Jones said. "I don't care if you have to ride all the way to the barn area, down Nelson Avenue, she don't get in front.  Because if you come up to Proud Spell and eyeball her, you don't beat her.''  For the race they picked up a big check $360,000.  This filly has now won 11 lifetime races for $1,975,110.

Breeders Cup Schedule: Big Brown Trainer Rick Dutrow wants criticism to stop (06-28-08)

It's been three weeks now since Big Brown went for the Triple Crown and finished last.  Trainer Rick Dutrow still doesn't know what went wrong in the race.  He is also wondering why the media and the fans are ganging up on him.  In his first news conference since the Belmont, the trainer wants to know why all the negative stuff and wishes it would stop.  If he wasn't so arrogant and ready to talk trash, maybe people would not be so quick to "gang up on you".

Dutrow has got more press then anyone in horse racing for the past few months.  More attention came his way after he received a 15-day suspension by Kentucky racing.  He received this suspension for another horse in training and exceeded the allowable limit for a drug that enables horses to breathe easier while exercising.  This happened at Churchill Downs on May 2, the day before Big Brown won the big one the Kentucky Derby.  When speaking to the media Friday at Aqueduct Racetrack "It's my responsibility, but it's not my fault," Dutrow said, he went on to say”It's just a mistake that happened but it's not as big a deal as everyone is trying to make it out to be.  "I'm just getting flooded with everybody calling me all the time with negative stuff. I wish it would all stop."  Dutrow is planning to run Big Brown in the Haskell at Monmouth Park, and come back just twenty days later on short rest to run in the Travers at Saratoga, and then he plans to run him in his last race of his career Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita.

Caught once a year for nine years?  Now we know why Big Brown was "big" don't we?  Well, crime pays because he won two huge races and purses even though that horse could have been doped worse than the MLB in the days prior to the race.  I wonder how many times you need to dope horses before you’re banned from horse racing.   I have told everyone before in previous articles that Dutrow would get suspended soon for doping, and a month later here we are.  He is a real jerk and greedy in my opinion what they should do is change his name to DUMBTROW.  What is a "15-day suspension", nothing in my opinion; he will not dope his horse for 15 days?  He will be right back at it after that.  All this money he has earned for a 15-day suspension, and he can still run his horse just under another name.  What they need to do is bar him from the track for at least a year.  Can this guy take some accountability once in his life?  He say's this isn't a big deal, and it is way overblown and so on, but he has been caught once a year for nine years.  This is a slap on the wrist.

Breeders Cup Schedule: Big Brown Rick Dutrow says bad ride by Jockey (06-11-08) PDF Print E-mail

Trainer of Big Brown Rick Dutrow Jr Says bad ride by jockey (06-10-08) As horse racing fans anticipate the Breeders Cup schedule some cant seem to let go of the Triple Crown let down. Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. says he feels "like a loser" after Big Brown's last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes, and was pulled up top of the stretch.  Dutrow was also not happy with the way jockey Kent Desormeaux rode Big Brown.  "I feel like a loser right now and I don't know why," Dutrow told the Daily Racing Form on Monday. "Usually when I get beat I can handle it the right way, and I've handled this the right way, but I just feel like something's not right."  Dutrow said he found nothing wrong with Big Brown after the race.  You feel like a loser because you ARE a loser; in fact, you are one of the biggest losers I have seen in ANY sport in a long, long time. Will Big Brown run in the Breeders Cup schedule of upcoming races?

Desormeaux pulled up Big Brown with quarter-mile remaining in the race, and was beaten by long shot Da' Tara.  "I don't know why he had to do that," said Dutrow, who questioned Desormeaux's decisions in the race.  "I'm sure he didn't have any idea what the hell was going on into the first turn, the way [Desormeaux] was switching him all over the damn track," Dutrow said. "I don't know what he was doing."  Remember this when wondering why Desormeaux pulled up, he had no way of knowing if the horse was hurt, or just didn't have it in him to run that day.  He probably was cautious after the horror show of the Eight Belles tragedy.  Jockey Kent D. is nothing but a class act and a top-notch jockey.  If he says the horse had nothing to give and was simply not there that day, then guess what Dutrow?  The horse had nothing to give and was simply not there that day. Do you think jockey Kent Desormeaux will be aboard Big Brown for the Breeders Cup schedule?

I don't get howDutrow can blame Desormeaux on this one.  Kent did a pretty good job recovering from the bad start and to not get boxed in.  Big Brown was third and on the outside, coming out of the first turn, down the backstretch.  He was in prime position to win it.  The same position he was in, in the Derby and Preakness.  Everything this jerk Dutrow has said has made it clear just what a monumentous loser he truly is.

Big Brown loses Belmont Stakes fails at Triple Crown  (06-08-08)

Big Brown, the winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes has never lost as race in his career.  He came in last place in the Belmont and was eased up.  When Big Brown turned for home, something wasn't right.  He was eased up in the homestretch, was so far behind at the end that his margin of defeat wasn't even charted.  Big Brown was attempting to become the 12th Triple Crown winner, and the first in 30 years.  Jockey Kent Desormeaux, after the race had this to say "He was empty.  He didn't have anything left.  There are no popped tires.  He's just out of gas. I had no horse," Desormeaux said, in stark contrast to Dutrow's unabashed pronouncements that a Triple Crown was "a foregone conclusion. Will Big Brown run for the Breeders Cup?

"He looked as if he clipped heels early on and was RANK in the first turn.  Kent Desormeaux asked him for more and he had nothing.  He did the right thing in easing him.  I don't understand why Desormeau was so dead set on staying up with the leaders.  I guess he was scared to death of getting pinned in.  In this long of a race, trot along behind the leader's group with the horse you know doesn't like to be in the middle and stay back, and then make a move after you run the first mile like he has done in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.  Seemed like a silly strategy given the fact that there wasn't a horse in front of him that could just out run him.

I applaud and commend Kent Desormeaux for pulling up on the horse once he knew the race was out of reach.  I appreciate his good judgment and compassion for this horse.  I guess Big Brown isn't as good as his owner says he is... that’s why we race the races.  Somewhere in a back room in Vegas there are a few dozen sportsbook managers giving one another high fives.  They can't be happier that Big Brown failed.  I feel sorry for the horse and the pressure it was under.  I had a tough time rooting for Big Brown simply because his trainer is such a jerk.  Guaranteeing a victory in a Triple Crown race is just stupid and watching Dutrow act like a big baby after the race was priceless!!  I take my hat off to the jockey for not pushing Big Brown.  It made no sense to beat the horse to a sixth or seventh finish.  Way to go Kent and Big Brown will be back.  Leave the guarantees to the ones doing the event.

Everyone thought this would be the last time they see Big Brown race, but this isn't true.  They thought he would go to Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky, and a retirement announcement would be held on Sunday.  Instead, Iavarone said IEAH is sticking to its plan to train Big Brown for the Travers Stakes Aug. 23 at Saratoga.  This is where Big Brown won his first race, and trainer Rick Dutrow's favorite track to race.  "Unless something shows up, we're going to maintain his regular training schedule," Dutrow said, "which will be to breeze in a couple of weeks and point him for the Travers. ... I haven't lost confidence in the horse."

Belmont Payouts: Post Race Reaction from Big Brown jockey Kent Desormeaux (07-08-08)A disappointing day to say the least as Big Brown fails to take the Triple Crown, unless you are one of the few who hit the window for your Belmont payouts. As the dust settles on the Belmont Stakes we all want to know why? OnlineSportsHandicapping.com offers you a post race reaction from Big Brown jockey Kent Desormeaux, Dr. Bramlage and others. In this sports video recap of the Belmont Stakes Desormeaux explains what he felt happened with Big Brown and the status of Big Browns condition. "This horse was in no way shape or form lame" stated Big Brown jockey Kent Desormeaux "but there was something amiss"

We all sat on the edge of our seats to see Triple Crown history and luckily missed a tragedy with Big Brown. "If the quarter crack played any role Big Brown would have shown lameness" Dr. Larry Bramlage stated "what broke his race today was not apparent".

Casino Drive was scratched early in the day on Saturday and did not run in the Belmont Stakes also because of an injured hoof, everyone thought this removed one more obstacle between Big Brown and the Triple Crown. Not the case, Da Tara burst out of the gate and went wire to wire with staggering Belmont payouts. Da'Tara, won the Breeder's Cup race last year, took the lead from the start of the race and held it all the way to the end, sitting on the top results board. Denis of Cork finished second, followed by Anak Nakal.

The Belmont Stakes payouts are as follows:
