The battle of New York concludes on Sunday night on ESPN as John Maine faces Chien-Ming Wang.  It should be an excellent pitching matchup as both starters have been superb this season.  Maine is 5-2 on the season with an ERA of 2.81 for the Mets. He has won his last four starts and has not allowed more than two runs in 7 straight starts.  Wang is 6-1 on the season with an ERA of 2.90 for the Yankees.  He has faced the Mets once in his career, winning last season 8-2.

New York Mets at New York Yankees
Sunday, 8:05 pm Eastern – ESPN

The Mets and Yankees could both use the emotion of this series. "Being a [former] player, I understand how important it is to the city," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "It's amazing to me. It's kind of like a playoff atmosphere to me, because of the senses of all the fans. When you're walking someplace, whether they're a Mets fan or a Yankees fan, there's a lot more responses. I think it's enjoyable and I think it's great for the game."

Neither team is scoring much lately so pitching could decide the series.  The Yankees are still without Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada. "You definitely want to have bragging rights in your city," the Yankees’ Johnny Damon said. "Every game we play we've got to go out and play like it's the Mets series or a Red Sox series. Shame on us if we can't get up. We need to come ready to play against any team, rivalry or no rivalry."

The series is also important to the Mets and manager Willie Randolph.  There are rumors that his job may be in jeopardy if the team flops this weekend against the Yankees.  The Mets and Yankees split six games last season.  Overall, the Yankees lead in the all-time series 35-25 against the Mets. The Yankees lead the Major Leagues with an all-time record of 113-79 (.589) in Interleague Play, tied with Oakland for the most wins. They were 10-8 last year.

Here were the MLB betting stats as the series began on Friday.  The Mets are 10-26 in their last 36 Interleague road games.

The Yankees are 47-14 in their last 61 Interleague home games.  The Yankees are 18-7 in the last 25 home games against the Mets.

The Over is 4-1 in the Mets last 5 Interleague road games. The Over is 6-2 in the Mets last 8 Interleague games overall. The Over is 5-2-1 in the Mets last 8 road games.

The Under is 5-0 in the Yankees last 5 home games. The Under is 30-10-1 in the Yankees last 41 overall. The Over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings at Yankee Stadium between the two teams.
