Wednesday night’s game between the Red Sox and Yankees has the potential to be a classic as 16 game-winner Josh Beckett matches up against Roger Clemens. New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies

The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies continue their series on Wednesday as Oliver Perez matches up against Jamie Moyer. Perez is 12-8 on the season with an ERA of 3.34 while Moyer is 11-10 and has an ERA of 5.16 this season. SBG Global reports that early betting has the public taking the favored Mets on the Road.
Perez had a nice outing on Saturday giving up no runs against the Dodgers in 7 innings. It was his second straight win. Perez hasn't faced Philadelphia since early in the year and it was not pretty as he walked seven and didn’t make it out of the third inning in that start.
Moyer has been bad lately for Philadelphia. He has a 7.27 ERA in five August starts. His last start against San Diego was poor as he allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings. He is 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts vs. the Mets this season.

A big series in the National League Central starts on Tuesday as the Chicago Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs get good news to start the series as Alfonso Soriano is set to return after spending three weeks on the disabled list. Chicago won just eight of its next 19 games Soriano. "He's ready to go," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said, "He's worked hard, and we could wait another week, but he's not going to get any better than he is." Soriano is batting .297 with 18 home runs and 18 stolen bases in 104 games this season.

The series is huge for the Brewers who are 7-16 this month, the worst mark of any team in baseball. "This is the biggest series for us all year," shortstop J.J. Hardy said, "And it's fun to play games that mean this much."

National League Cy Young contender Brandon Webb looks for his 15th win of the season as the Arizona Diamondbacks take on the San Diego Padres in the second game of their important series at Petco Park. Webb is 14-8 on the season with an ERA of 2.63. He will be opposed by the Padres Justin Germano who is 6-7 and has an ERA of 4.24. SBG Global reports that early betting has the public taking the favored Diamonbacks on the Road.
Webb's 42-inning scoreless streak ended in his last start against Milwaukee but he still got the win, allowing two runs in seven innings. Webb will be pitching with an extra day of rest since the Padres had an off-day last week.
Germano pitched well in his last start on Thursday against the Mets but left with a no decision. He struck out two and walked two.

Mike Mussina may be pitching for his job tonight as the Yankees conclude their series at Detroit against the Tigers. Mussina is 8-9 on the season with an ERA of 5.22. He will be opposed by Justin Verlander who is 13-5 and has an ERA of 3.94. Mussina was horrible in his last outing giving up seven runs and seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings against the Angels. "It was just bad from the start, and I don't know why because I felt good warming up,' he said, "That goes in the top five worst games of my career right there. It was just awful. If I could explain it, I would know how to fix it. And right now I don't.” Mussina was terrible in the outing before that against the Tigers where he gave up seven runs and nine hits in five innings. Mussina is 17-6 against Detroit in his career with a 2.70 ERA. SBG Global reports that early betting has the public taking the Tigers at home.

Verlander was no better in his last outing. He gave up seven runs and 10 hits in four innings to Cleveland. Verlander has not lost back-to-back starts all season. In his only start against New York this year, Verlander gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-5 victory Aug. 16 to beat Mussina. In two career starts against the Yankees, Verlander is 1-0 with a 7.84 ERA.
The Tigers held off the Yankees on Sunday 5-4 as Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen and Marcus Thames all homered. Granderson’s was a lead off inside-the-park home run. "We knew how much we needed this one,' said Detroit reliever Joel Zumaya, "A big game against the Yankees means a lot of emotion.” Detroit is still 2 1/2 games back of Cleveland for the top spot in the AL Central.
