2007 Ultimate Fighting Championship 71 - Liddell vs. Jackson

Chuck 'the Iceman' Liddell has only lost three fights in his entire MMA fighting career. Whenever Liddell has lost to someone he's always returned later to pay them back with a loss and a beating.

Liddell lost to Randy Couture and Jeremy Horn and came back to knock out both of them in the rematch. In fact The Iceman's hard-hitting fists have laid out Couture to the mat twice. That's only two out of three though. Liddell still has one man left to pay back and he'll get that opportunity at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night, versus Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson.

Rampage is a perfect nickname for Jackson because he is an animal that actually gets better in a fight after taking a few shots from his opponent. It's been said that hitting Rampage 'wakes him up' and once he's awake he'll deliver his own powerful strikes and lethal slams until his opponent is out.

The first UFC fight between Liddell and Jackson took place way back in 2003 in Japan in the MMA PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix. The beginning of that fight belonged to Liddell, who peppered Jackson with hard shots to the face and some quick leg strikes early on. Again, that tends to wake up Jackson and it did just that in Japan. The end of the first round belonged to Jackson, as he rebounded with some solid punching combos that left Liddell staggered. Jackson got Liddell on the ground and looked to be moving in for the kill before Liddell was saved by the bell. In the second round it was all over after Jackson slammed Liddell into the ground and got on top, delivering hard shots to Liddell's head and midsection. After a number of hard blows the ref finally stepped in handing the fight to Jackson. As Jackson celebrated the win, Liddell remained down for several minutes recovering from the pounding that Jackson had inflicted on him.

If the rematch is as good a fight as Liddell and Jackson's first brawl, UFC fans are in for a wicked fight on Saturday night. Liddell packs one of the hardest punches in the UFC and to beat Jackson he'll likely have to knock him out. If the fight ends up on the ground the advantage likely goes to Jackson, who is a strong grappler and can dole out plenty of punishment after taking his opponent down. Taking his opponent to the ground also allows Jackson to get in one of his insane power slams that have ended a number of fights throughout his career.

As the reigning UFC Middleweight champion, Liddell enters this match up as the favorite, but all Jackson needs to do is land one punch or deliver one quick takedown to pull off a huge upset. Liddell enters the fight on a seven-fight winning streak and will exit the octagon on Saturday night with win No. 8, or watch Jackson take his title and his reputation as the toughest and best fighter in the UFC today.
