After a complete let down by my cable company (BrightHouse) I missed the first 4 matchups of the Elite XC CBS Sports MMA premiere . Luckily I have alternative sources to catch my MMA fights and with no help from the cable company I'm able to report the CBS Elite XC results of last nights CBS Sports Saturday Night Fights Elite XC premiere. With the premiere of the fastest growing sport in America, many of you actually got to see what added up to be a night of protecting the fighter, with early referee decisions to stop the fights America was short changed on the usual brawl that takes place in the octagon. I have to wonder, were these early stoppages due to the fact that mainstream America is just not ready for the usual pounding that takes place in an MMA matchup?
The EXC middleweight title matchup between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith ended up in a disappointing "no contest" after the referee stopped the fight. What took place during the fight leading up to the referee's decision was an exciting example of whats to come as we look forward to another CBS Sports "Saturday Night Fight". Ill be looking to see the rematch between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith. Now, on to the Elite XC MMA main event which thanks to unreliable service provided by Brighthouse I was graciously able to witness. This anticipated MMA matchup had Kimbo Slice as the heavy favorite at -600 against Scott Thompson at +400 at BodogLife.com. Kimbo defintely got a run for his money when Thompson took the fight to the ground which put Kimbo in unfamiliar territory. The experts had predicted that Kimbo would take Thompson quickly in the first round, that did not happen. Instead, Thompson took Kimbo to the floor and with some help from the referee Kimbo was able to fight his way to the third round. I was slightly impressed that Kimbo's ground game although not perfected allowed him to slip out of what sure looked to be fight ending positioning by Thompson. Ultimately, Kimbo beat Thompson with a face-to-face attack and some help from the refereee after Kimbo landed a right to Thompson's ear splitting it wide open. ( did you see that ear? obviously Thompson is not stranger to attacks to his ears - lol ) The englishman Scott Thompson did control the fight tempo throughout the matchup slamming Kimbo to the matt and delivering elbow after elbow. Thompson however was unable to win the fight with a triangle attempt. The englishman exposed Kimbo's major weekness which is the ground game and Kimbo will definetely have to amp up his ground game for his next MMA matchup. Although the CBS Sports Elite XC premiere seemed to have been plagued with early stoppages overall it was an exciting night and I can guarantee America will want more of the fastest growing sport in America. Until then, enjoy the replay of "Saturday Night Fights" on CBS Sports courtesy of Youtube. Want more CBS Sports Elite XC news and Fight Picks on your mobile device?
