NBA Picks: Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers Betting Preview (06-14-08) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Robert Johnson

Saturday, 14 June 2008

The Los Angeles Lakers will try and recover from Thursday’s collapse and win their final home game of the season on Sunday night.  The Lakers had a golden chance to even the NBA Finals on Thursday but they blew a 24 point lead that they may be thinking about for a long time.  The Celtics were down 18 points at the half but rallied in the third quarter and won 97-91. Paul Pierce had 20 points while Ray Allen added 19. It was a historic collapse for the Lakers and now they must fight even more history.  No team in NBA Finals history has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the title. SBG Global reports that early NBA betting has the public taking Celtics on the Road.

NBA Finals Betting Odds and Options (06-13-08)No, Will Ferrell and Luke Wilson aren’t gearing up for another Animal House like frat flick, this Old School vs. New School is a very cool NBA Finals betting option offered up by SportsBetting.com on this year’s NBA Finals. As most of us are aware, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are not meeting for the first time in the NBA Finals.

Although the Lakers feature a talented cast consisting of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher and the Boston Celtics counter with Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Leon Powe these aren’t the most celebrated teams for either franchise.

Dating back to 1959, when the Boston Celtics swept the then Minneapolis Lakers 4-0, the two franchises have met 10 other times, 11 if you count the current series,

The Celtics hold the NBA Finals betting edge, taking eight out of the 10 completed series although the Lakers have taken the last two.

Out of all the times the two teams have met, the championship series’ featuring Magic Johnson and Larry Bird are the ones that fans remember the most.

Prior to the Celtics’ NBA Finals betting Game 4 comeback victory over the Lakers, SportsBetting.com had a prop bet that sought to bridge the gap between the Magic-Bird days and the current Kobe vs. Boston’s new big three (Allen, Pierce and Garnett).

Taking numbers from Game 4 of the 1984, 1985, 1987 championship series the props were put up on how players of today compared with the players of yesteryear.

Among the NBA Final bets that were offered for Game 4 were: Whether Larry Bird’s rebound total from Game 4 of the ‘84 final (21 boards) would be more than the number of points Kevin Garnett scored last night, which ended up being 16.

There was also a bet featuring Boston’s Chief and Truth. If the combined Total of Paul Pierce’s points and rebounds in last night’s Game 4 surpassed the 25 points and rebounds Robert Parish amassed back in Game 4 in 1987 bettors could’ve won, although Pierce ended up falling one short with 24.

There were a number of very interesting offerings in the Old School vs. New School category.

Here are some other prop bets of note: On top of the usual NBA Finals MVP (Paul Pierce is the odds-on at -200) and with the series at 3-1 in Boston’s favor, the Celtics have become an overwhelming series price favorite at -900. If you think the Lakers can come back however, and that isn’t out of the realm of possibility, L.A. is now +550 to win.

Game 5 is set to take place on Sunday (speaking of which, it’s Father’s Day so do something nice for your old man) and there is a prop on the Highest Scoring Quarter.

If you think it will be the first quarter your bet will pay out at +200, the second and fourth quarters at +250 and the third at +275.

More NBA Finals Betting Odds and Options will be made available as tip off for Game 5 approaches. The L.A. Lakers will be fighting for their playoff lives and the Boston Celtics want to close things off so it should be a great Game 5, enjoy it and for all the fathers out there, Happy Fathers Day.

Check out SportsBetting.com for all the props, bonuses and lines for Game 5 of the Finals.

Boston Celtics Make Historical come back to Win NBA Finals Game 4 (06-13-08) PDF Print E-mail

Boston Celtics Make History come back from 24 down to win Game 4 (06-13-08) The Celtics came from 24 points down to beat LA, 97-91 on Thursday night in the NBA Finals.  "I don't want to get overjoyed," Paul Pierce said. "I want to go out there to try and win Game 5 on Father's Day and then I'll be able to breathe.  Right now, I'm waiting to exhale."  Pierce scored 20 points, Garnett had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Ray Allen had 19 points, Ray Allen played the whole game.  That's amazing.  On top of that he grabbed 9 boards, had 3  steals, was perfect from the line (5-5), and shot well from the field (6-11). He came to play.  The oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com set the NBA Finals betting odds for the LA Lakers -6.5 to Boston for your NBA Finals picks on Game 5.

Eddie House was huge for Boston in the win.  I have been saying throughout the playoffs to use him more like they did in the regular season.  He gave the team energy on the defensive end and largely avoided missed assignments, pulled down 4 boards and didn't turn the ball over a single time.  Eddie House hit two big three pointers, and hit the go-ahead shot in the fourth.  It was simply too much Eddie House when all was said and done.  When the Celtics got it going, I could feel pressure on the Lakers and it felt like a storm that no one can overcome.  When a team is going on a run, there is nothing you can do to stop them. Eddie House and Posey made some big money shots there.  Those are shots that make you more money.

Wow... just wow... The Lakers can't help but feel like the Patriots right now... especially if the Celtics win the series... so much for destiny right?  I love how ESPN is always comparing Michael Jordan to Kobe.  MJ would never relinquish a 24 point lead, ESPECIALLY in the Finals... so stop the comparisons.  Kobe Bryant scored 19 points on 6-of-19 shooting but the league's MVP couldn't rescue the Lakers when they needed him most.

You probably need a strong drink too after last night performance.  The Lakers blowing a 24 pt lead!  There is no one person to blame; the team has to be the blame.  No defense, there are some Lakers players who don't play defense and next season, they definitely will be gone.  Some of Hollywood's brightest stars glimmered, including the usual: Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington and Dyan Cannon.  They were joined by former NFL star Jerry Rice, actress Jennifer Garner with husband Ben Affleck, singer Justin Timberlake and Arizona quarterback Matt Leinart.  You want those actors in that building who are not real Laker fans. (The real ones can't afford $50 000 tickets) to stand up and cheer when they are down?  I don't think they can even see with dark shades courtside.  Too bad Jack Nicholson is too old to cheer.  Hope he did not have a heart attack.

NBA Finals Odds: Boston vs Lakers Game 4 Betting Preview and Picks (06-11-08) In Game 3 of your NBA Finals picks, Kobe Bryant had 36 points with an MVP-worthy performance, Sasha Vujacic added 20 points  as the Lakers get the victory, 87-81.  "We just wanted to play," said Bryant, whose only flaw was an 11-of-18 night from the foul line.  "I don't think anyone was feeling desperate."   Boston now leads the series 2-1, finally the Lakers join the series.  Kobe did everything he could to put the Lakers in position to win, starting the game very aggressively and sealing the deal at the end.  The oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com set the NBA Finals betting odds for the LA Lakers -7.5 favorites to Boston for your NBA Finals picks on Game 4.

Ray Allen scored 25 points, 15 on 3-pointers, for the Celtics, but only one-third of Boston's Big Three showed up.  Lakers better step it up even more in Game 4 because the Celts will make adjustments, one of which is not putting Allen one-on-one with Kobe at the end of the game...don't understand what Boston Coach Doc was thinking...Spurs Bowen couldn't guard Kobe one-on-one, let alone Ray-Ray.  Kevin Garnett scored 13 points on just 6-of-21 shooting and Paul Pierce just scored 6 points, missed 12 shots.  KG and Pierce had a bad games, it also looked like the Celtics who pride themselves as players who leave it all out on the court, basically give up at the 30 second mark.

Home court advantage. The stars and reserves of both teams play better at home, except for Odom and Gasol who seem rather confused by the game of basketball.  Lakers defense was excellent but Gasol and Odom need to stop shrinking under the spotlight.  Odom is inconsistent (again missing layups and dunks) and Gasol is playing too soft around the rim.

Game 3 Tuesday night, that was all the Lakers had to offer at home.  Boston actually came back and had the lead in the 4th quarter.  Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce did nothing all night and still had a shot at winning.  The Celtics wanted to win this game, but the Lakers absolutely had to.  Yet the Celtics still had the opportunity to steal it from them.  Pierce has proven that he can score against this Lakers team and he'll be back for games 4 and 5.  The Celtics need to steal one of these games on the road from the Lakers, or they will be going home 3-2.  They played a decent game on Tuesday with only Ray Allen getting it done.  If all of the Big 3 can get going they could upset the Lakers as huge underdogs.

NBA Finals Odds: LA Lakers vs Boston Celtics Game 3 Betting Preview and Picks (06-10-08) NBA Finals BIG 3?  Better make it the BIG 4!  Rajon Rondo out of the University of Kentucky is going to be a future all star point guard, his job isn't very hard this year but 16 assists and 2 turnovers in Game 2 of the NBA Finals is a good start.  Rondo has blown past expectations like he blows by defenders, dropping dimes like an inebriated cashier.  Boston now is up 2-0 in the NBA Finals after a big win on Sunday night over the LA Lakers, 108-102.  The Lakers were down 24 points with less than 8 minutes left, the Lakers got all the way to a 2 point game before Boston ended up winning.  This series goes to LA now for three games in a row, where the LA Lakers have not lost in this NBA Playoffs.  The oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com set the NBA Finals odds for the LA Lakers -9.5 favorites to Boston for NBA Finals Game 3.

Celtics fans, stop saying this series is over, and remember what happen to the New England Patriots this year when they were perfect going into the Superbowl.  This series can easily go back to Boston 3-2 in the Lakers favor.  In Game 2, Boston had three amazing quarters, one terrible one.  The Lakers trailed 95-71 with 7:55 remaining but used a 31-9 run to pull to 104-102 on two free throws by Bryant with 38.4 seconds left.  LA's Sasha Vujacic had his shot blocked by Paul Pierce in the closing second and both Pierce and James Posey made two free throws to ice the game.  Some may wonder if the comeback at the end of the game was good for the Lakers.  The Lakers may use it for a confidence booster in Game 3, or could this be a wake up call for the Celtics?  If they want to put the Lakers away, they have to play all 4 quarters.  If Boston plays 48 minutes instead of 36 minutes there's no reason why they can't steal a game in LA.  "I think they learned a lot, because we are a young team and I think that shows you're never really out of a game," said Kobe Bryant, who scored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth and lit into his teammates with a parental discretion-advised tirade. "Think being down 24, if you find yourself down eight or 10, that's not something that should discourage you."

Boston outshot LA 37-9 from the free-throw line Sunday night.  Not to worry though, the Lakers will be getting all the calls in LA in Game 3 starting Tuesday night.  That way the series returns to Boston for Game 6.  Anyone who thinks that Sunday's game officiating wasn't horrendous needs to be hit in the face with a sledgehammer.  So many bad calls on both sides, calling ticky-tack fouls and then not calling obvious ones.  The Lakers are also banking on getting a lift on their home floor, where they are 8-0 in the postseason and unbeaten in 14 home games since March 28.  Who will win Game 3, will the Celtics take a commanding lead or the Lakers get back in the series?

NBA Angle plays for this NBA Finals Odds Matchup When LA LAKERS team played as a Home team - with 1 day off - After a non conference game - Coming off 2 ATS lost - Coming off a 2 game losing streak 11-1 SU in this spot.  When ANY NBA Team played as a -9.5 to -12.0 Home Favorite - with 1 day off - Scored between 101 - 105 POINTS FOR in their last game LA LAKERS 88-18 SU in this spot
