The Atlanta Thrashers will look to get their first win of the season as they host the undefeated Ottawa Senators on Wednesday. Ottawa is getting great goaltending from backup Martin Gerber who is filling in for the injured Ray Emery. Gerber has a 1.73 goals-against average so far this season. Gerber is 14-0-2 with a 2.02 GAA in 16 appearances since Dec. 23rd of last year. Gerber lost his job last season to Emery and never got it back as Emery led the Senators to the Stanley Cup Finals. Ottawa this season is off to the best start in the league at 4-0-0. "It's always a work in progress," said Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, "You always try to tweak some things and I'm sure the coaches will come up with things we can do a lot better, but right now we're feeling pretty good." SBG Global reports that early betting has the public taking Thrasher at Home. SBG Global Opening Line: Anaheim -150, Total 5 Over (-120)
One team will win their first ever Stanley Cup Championship after the Stanley Cup Finals is over. The Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks play game #1 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight in Anaheim. SBG Global reports that early wagers for the Stanley Cup have the public taking the Senators on the road.
No Canada team has won the Stanley Cup since 1993. "We're hockey historians also," Ottawa forward Jason Spezza said. "Having the opportunity to bring a Cup back to Canada and become Canada's team is definitely another driving reason for us to try to win."
This is the 2nd try for Anaheim at winning the Stanley Cup. They were one win short in 2003 when they lost to New Jersey even though goalie J.S. Giguere won the Conn Smythe trophy that year as playoff MVP. He is a big reason the Ducks are in the Finals again and may be the deciding factor in this series. Anaheim also has Norris Trophy winners Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger on the blueline. This series really comes down to the Anaheim defense and Giguere stopping the best line in hockey.
Anaheim is a -140 favorite with a total of 5 over (-120) at SBG Global.
Ottawa has Daniel Alfredsson, Spezza and Dany Heatley. Heatley is first in playoff scoring with 21 points, and Spezza is right behind him with 20. Alfredsson is fourth with 17 points, including 10 goals. "They're the hottest line in the playoffs," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "They lead their team in all the offensive categories, plus people have described Alfredsson as probably the best player in the playoffs. For us, it will be about trying to take away time and space."
Ottawa hasn't played since defeating top-seeded Buffalo on May 19. They haven't been to California since October of 2003. "We're just changing our clocks for a couple of days," said Senators coach Bryan Murray, "People have to make adjustments in this league if you're going to be competitive."

The 2007 Stanley Cup will make its home in either Anaheim or Ottawa this year, as the Ducks and Senators face-off in the Stanley Cup final starting Monday night. The Senators will enter this nhl series well-rested after having eight days off between knocking off Buffalo and starting up with Anaheim. The Ducks will enjoy some time off as well, with five days of rest after sending Detroit packing on Tuesday. In their series clincher against Detroit, the Ducks jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Rob Niedermayer, Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. Henrik Zetterberg finally got the Wings on the board with his sixth postseason marker early in the third period, but Samuel Pahlsson scored less than three minutes later to give the Ducks back their three-goal cushion. It turned out that the Ducks really needed that three-goal lead after Pavel Datsyuk scored two power-play goals to get Detroit back within a goal. That was as close as the Red Wings would get though, as Jean-Sebastien Giguere shut the door from there on to get Anaheim to their second Cup final in the last four years. This will be the modern-day Senators' first trip to the Cup final in franchise history. The original Senators last brought the Cup back to Ottawa in 1927. The Canadian Capital hasn't seen a Cup champion since after the original Sens moved to St. Louis following the 1933-34 season. This year's Senators heads to the final with plenty of firepower, led by their three big guns, Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza and captain Daniel Alfredsson. Heatley leads all players with 21 postseason points, while Alfredsson is the playoff goal leader with 10 goals, four of which have been game-winners. Spezza is no slouch either with 20 points during the postseason campaign. Bet on Hockey at Wagerweb.com |

The third round of the 2007 NHL playoffs is still a few days from getting underway, but there's a lot to look forward to in the Eastern Conference final. The Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres will do battle for the right to represent the East in the 2007 Stanley Cup finals. The Sabres came within one game of heading to the Cup final last season, but fell to eventual Cup champion Carolina in Game 7 of the Conference final. The Sabres made it that far last year with a number of key players sidelined by injury, but this time around they have all their big scorers and heavy hitters healthy and ready to go. The Sabres got through the New York Islanders in five hockey games in the first round and took apart the New York Rangers in six games in Round 2. Buffalo's leading scorers through the first two rounds are Daniel Briere with 11 points (2 goals, 9 assists) and clutch performer Chris Drury with 10 points (7 goals, 3 assists). Thomas Vanek has also turned it on with five postseason goals after playing his way to the bench in the playoffs last year. Ryan Miller has looked shaky at times during the playoffs, but he still sports some impressive numbers with a 2.06 goals against average and a .929 save percentage. The Senators swept through the Pittsburgh Penguins in five games in Round 1 and looked equally impressive while doing away with the =New Jersey Devils in five games in the second round. Ottawa's big guns have been firing throughout the playoffs so far, as Dany Heatley has collected 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) and Jason Spezza has 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists). Even maligned captain Daniel Alfredsson has avoided the playoff choker label so far this postseason with six goals and five assists. One of Ottawa's biggest problems during some of their early playoff exits in the past has been lackluster goaltending. Ray Emery has erased any of those questions this year with some stellar play in nets, while posting a 2.04 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. Bet on Hockey at Wagerweb.com |
