The AFL will be kicking off their 22nd season in Los Angeles tonight. The AFL is in 17 different cities and will have more televised coverage than ever before on ESPN /ABC. I tip my hat to AFL officials, owners, and player’s, the AFL is a complete success! The odds were enormous against the league ever making it past the inaugural season in 1985-86. If Harvard traveled to Memphis this season, for a road game at the Tigers home court, the money line in that mat-up would probably be a similar. Baseball may be America’s national pastime but Football is our true love and we have yet to allow an imitation to succeed. Several have tried most notably the USFL and XFL but none even had the slightest bit of success. So what made the AFL different? Many different reasons can be attributed, but I would have to say its unique innovative nature was the primary reason for its survival and ultimate success. Playing indoors with similar but very different rules and having an electric atmosphere for fans coming to see the game ranks up there for reasons. The wall, the net, rules designed to allow for ultra-high scoring events, and many other factors. Foremost though I would have to say excellent business decisions and top-notch management made the AFL the success it is today. The Arena Football league was cost effective, unlike other upstart football leagues, they kept cost manageable. This allowed for years of not generating much income and gave fans a chance to get to know the league. Arena League owners didn’t have to fill the same stadiums with fans the NFL does and some of the other leagues tried to do. After some initial success time was on their side. The goals were realistic, no owners was trying to buy Heisman trophy winners away from the NFL. The teams are smaller having less players on the field with players going both ways and only a few coaches allows for much small pay-rolls. Finally they have put a good product that is highly entertaining on the field. Arena football had to grow on me somewhat but I think it was due to lack of televised exposure and for the first few years I lived in a state without a team. Similar to hockey the experience and excitement of the league is increased 10 fold at a live event The AFL has been innovative to say the least from its beginning. This season that tradition continues as 40 players will debut a device on their helmets dubbed as the “Shockometer”! A triangular piece measuring about 2 inches and featuring a little window with green and red indicator lights is attached to the helmet. Its purpose is to warn trainers, coaches, and doctors that someone has taken a dangerous hit with the indicator turning red. I guess you could say we have come a long way from the days a player strapped a leather skull cap to his head. John Heisman would probably think he was on another planet at a modern day AFL game! On July 27, 2008 New Orleans will host Arena Bowl XXII one year after the city hosted Arena Bowl XXI! The 2008 season kicks off at the STAPLES center tonight when the Los Angeles Avengers host the New Orleans VooDoo . Avengers head coach Ed Hodgkiss is going for his 30th regular-season home arena victory tonight versus the VooDoo. LA is 3-1 SU all-time in first week home openers. Led by Quarter Back Sonny Cumbie (4,370 YDs, 83 TDs, 13 INTs), last season Los Angeles won its first play-off game in team history. QB Sonny Cumbie, completed 28-of 42 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Avengers over New Orleans 48-36 in the two teams only meeting in 2007 2007 LEADERS VOODOO AVENGERS SERIES LEADER LEADS 1-0 LAST FIVE GAMES 1-4 3-2 LAST GAME Lost vs. Georgia 42-68 Lost vs. Utah 37-47 2007 LEADERS VOODOO AVENGERS PASSING Kelly: 396-264-2580-42-9 Cumbie: 610-378-4370-83-13 RECEIVING Jones: 96-1124-34 Turner: 105-1229-24 RUSHING Curran: 27-60-3 Ford: 82-192-19 TACKLES Haith: 66.5 Canonico: 101.0 SACKS Taylor: 8 Demary: 8 INTERCEPTIONS Haith: 4 Wheeler: 6 KICKING Houle: 58-71 PAT; 10-20 FG; 88 PTS Hamilton: 101-114 PAT; 16-30 FG; 149 PTS TEAM OFFENSE 52.1 PPG (13th); 305.0 YPG (6th) 52.7 PPG (10th); 295.1 YPG (9th) TEAM DEFENSE 58.0 PPG (14th); 292.4 YPG (9th) 53.0 PPG (10th); 292.6 YPG (10th Check the latest Arena Football Lines at OnlineSportsHandicapping.com before you bet on AFL Football at Betus.com
