"Sugar" Shane Mosley vs. Miguel Cotto Fight Recap (11-11-2007) PDF Print E-mail

Shane Mosley (44-4, with 37 KO's) versus undefeated WBA Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto (30-0, with 25 KO's) at Madison Square Garden was the "Super Bowl" in the boxing industry for 2007? Did this battle live up to the hype?

While this fight didn't have the glamour or the promotion of Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr., it was a much better fight, showcasing Mosley's speed and skill versus Cotto's pressure and much greater power.

The fight was very similar to the 1990 classic between Meldrick Taylor and Julio Cesar Chavez. Miguel Cotto is the younger, fresher fighter at just 27 years old, while Mosley was the wiley old vet looking to cement his legacy as one of the finest fighters of his era. Most handicappers chased after Mosley's name and the plus pay, but I didn't buy into it.

"I trained really hard for this fight," explained Cotto in a recent conference call with the media. "I'm pretty happy with that. I hope chances stay pretty good for bringing a good show to all the people."

Miguel Cotto was coming off a defining win over Zab Judah this past June, in a fight for which he gave all fans of the sport a night to remember, and I didn't overlook it. His consistent pressure of the fast and slick Judah led to an 11th-round TKO victory. The question people had going in is whether Cotto could duplicate that performance against a better fighter like Mosley.

Miguel Cotto didn't think Shane Mosley could handle him at the age of 36, believing that his youth and strength would carry him through the fight. Mosley prepared for this fight in his usual seclusion in Big Bear, California. We are all creatures of habit, "Sugar" needed to change his relaxed mind and train differently for Miguel, because Cotto was a fighter he had never seen in the ring before.

Both Mosley and Cotto were excited about the chance to fight in Madison Square Garden, a place where legends are made. Fighters like Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, all the great fighters fought in this arena.

This fight was Cotto's biggest test yet in his career. But I wouldn't say this was Mosley's biggest test, as he has been in there with the best already. Mosley was supposed to have been well-rounded and he brings a lot to the table. Some of the things that were missing from Judah, Mosley has them because he is a higher-level fighter. This was the first time that Mosley was going in as the opponent, and it showed. The way the beating line was moving, Mosley was a bigger underdog. Every time Cotto has fought, he has been the stronger guy. Shane has looked really good in his last few fights, but not the way he looked in his first fight with Oscar.

My quick fight recap from last night. First and foremost, was Vegas and the public were all over this bout. The line movement was slight, but definitely in the direction I agreed with. I seen this coming and anyone in the industry should have. The fight started with both fighters finding their edge. Both were looking in a mirror as there styles were the same. The difference in my opinion was that Cotto youth and hunger was all I seen throughout the match. Miguel used Mosley's body as a punching bag whenever he wanted it. Miguel was faster and throws many more punches which help the judges see his hunger. Cotto won the the card in the 8th when Mosley looked dazed and tried. Cotto took this UD in the 12th, leaving no doubt about the judge’s scores.
