Boxing Picks: Mayorga-Vargas

Vargas, a former IBF/WBA light middleweight champion has lost three of his last seven bouts including his last, both TKO losses (10th round TKO on February 2006, and 6th round TKO on July 2006) to Shane Mosley. Fernando looked great in his first bout with Mosley in February 2006, but he looked and fought poor in the 2nd fight, later blaming it on the struggles of making the 154 lb limit. Vargas had a "fast-track" impressive career, winning his first 20 fights (17 by knockout). Winning the IBF light middleweight title, then he caught a beating in the 12th round by Felix Trinidad on December 2nd, 2000. In my opinion, he was rushed too quickly into the fight. Vargas was knocked down four times in the bout and suffered a horrendous defeat to Trinidad, however he did put Felix on the mat once. Some say Vargas never recovered from that beating from Trinidad. A couple of fights later, this time in the 11th round, he was beat by Oscar De La Hoya in September 2002. Vargas with his offensive skills still dangerous, won his next four bouts before running into Shane Mosley. Mosley beat him twice in 2006. Fernando (26-4, 22 KO's) has shown to lately fight older than his 29 years of age should indicate. Which is why he is calling this his last fight. However, if you recap his defeats (Trinidad, De La Hoya, and Mosley twice), he has had a very impressive career. Which many believe he has a lot of fight left in him. Is this a true retirement or just extra hype to drive ticket sales?

Friday November 23rd, at the Staples Center, Los Angeles California
Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (28-6-1 23KO's) against "The Aztec Warrior" Fernando Vargas (26-4 22KO's). This brawl will be at a catch-weight of 162-pounds, 8 pounds higher than the Jr. Middleweight limit.

The Aztec Warrior was a true street fighter turned boxer growing up. You can times his professional record by 3 to just get a closer number of actual brawls. He is one tough kid that would rather die in the ring than leave anything left in it. He fights with anger from his father leaving him when he was just a child. Within most fighters, anger is their enemy, while Vargas is fueled by his. In my opinion, if he get this win, this will be his last fight. I have never been "unsatisfied" having banked on a Fernando Vargas fight, win or lose... If he leaves the ring, the sport will lose a crowd favorite. Like him or not, his excitement, courage, and pride will be missed by all in the industry...

Ricardo Mayorga has also fought all the "big names" along his way. On December 13, 2003, Mayorga lost his world titles, to Cory Spinks, the son of former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks, by a majority decision in Atlantic City. This came after Mayorga had made tasteless remarks about Spinks's deceased mother. Mayorga apologized after the fight. Mayorga dropped Trinidad in round three of their confrontation but he was dropped himself three times in round eight, the only three times Mayorga had ever been knocked down in his pro career, leading to a technical knockout loss. On October 5, 2004, three days after his fight with Trinidad, Mayorga announced his retirement from boxing, but he returned to boxing on August 13, 2005. When Mayorga became a two division world champion by gaining the vacant WBC World Super Welterweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Michele Piccirillo of Italy, in Chicago. On May 6, 2006 Mayorga also lost to Oscar De La Hoya by TKO (6th round).

El Matador is also no "role model" for your children. He is as rough and as street smart as Vargas is. He will go places with his words that made Iron Mike's "I'll eat your children" commit sound soft. Ask Spinks, De La Hoya, and now Vargas that. The press conference (a Don King production) ended with blows being thrown, who would have guessed that. The mouth of Mayorga was running, then Vargas started swinging, as both landed a few prefight punches in. Mayorga caught the worst of it as being held/separated by Vargas's crew while Fernando rings gave Ricardo a small cut above his left eye, after landing two right hooks. His eye is fine, will not an issue. In my opinion, it was typical Don King work at his best, which just gives us a little more taste of pre-excitement leading into this one.

So a quick recap of what to know before placing your wager on this must see regulated in ring street fight. You will see a dirty (low blows, headbutts, etc.), relentless blood dripping brawl from both fighters. A very good chance that one of them may never get back up as both live for there pride. Two very good offensive fighters with very little defense. You will see both hitting the mat a lot. You will see two men that hate each other more than you ever have seen in a boxing match before. I'm not going to lie, this is the most excited I have ever been in my life for a non-title bout, and this one will deliver for us. This fight will not be won in either corners, but won by the man with the better chin. Both men are even with heart, power, and close in speed at this point of their careers. Onlinesportshandicapping.com has some of the best boxing experts in the gaming business. I have watched and studied these fighters careers, I could call this bout for them.
