Nebraska was often undersized last season and that translated into the Huskers finishing last in the Big 12 in rebounding. Will more size in Nebraska have things looking up for the Huskers? Find out in Jeff's 2007 Nebraska Cornhuskers betting preview. 6’11’’ center Aleks Maric, a second team all-league pick, will be the foundation of the team this season. Jeremy Barr, a 6’8’’ transfer from USC, won’t be eligible until the end of the first semester. The Huskers will be happy when this kid is able to get on the court. Alonzo Edwards is regarded as the best athlete among Nebraska’s newcomers this year. Shang Ping, a 6’10’’ Chinaman and Alex Chapman, a 6’9’’ big with the ability to run the floor, will gobble up more space and solve Nebraska’s size issues. Ryan Anderson spent much of his freshman season battling down low because of Nebraska’s size problems. He finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding. With the influx of size, the Huskers will be able to put him back out on the wing this season. He brings some versatility to the backcourt and should cause some matchup problems. The top candidates to replace two-year starting point guard Charles Richardson are freshmen Cookie Miller and Brandon Richardson. The point will be a weak spot for the Huskers with these freshman ultimately experiencing some growing pains. When you hurt at the point, normally your team is going to struggle. Doc Sadler did a great job in his first season at Nebraska managing 17 wins with a team that was almost always outmanned and outsized. He got his troops playing with maximum effort every night. Now, he has more size and talent. If he can coax the same effort, the Huskers may have a shot to surprise some teams. Still, a NCAA Tournament berth this season is not likely because of the inexperience in the backcourt. We’ll look for this team to be a strong contender for an NIT title this season.
