I tend to agree with the books. Not only do I think Kansas will be the top team in the Big 12, but I feel they are a squad capable of winning it all. Brandon Rush’s knee injury, which forced him to withdraw from the NBA draft and to return to KU for his junior season, may be one of the most fortunate injuries I’ve ever seen a program endure.
Other than Julian Wright and his 12.0 points per game, Kansas returns every member of last season’s Elite Eight team which finished 33-5. KU won its third straight Big 12 championship along the way. Rush, Russell Robinson, and Mario Chalmers will all be third year starters. Sherron Collins and Darrell Arthur will be two of the nation’s top sophs. Throw in experienced seniors Sasha Kaun and Darnell Jackson and it’s easy to see why Kansas is considered one of the best teams in the country this season. At +1600, they are a very solid futures pick to win it all as the books have them slightly undervalued.
Kansas outrebounded its opponents by nearly 7.0 boards per game last season. Depsite losing its leading rebounder, Julian Wright, Bill Self does not seem hopeful when he says they’ll be even better in the paint this season-he means it. He is expecting huge things from Arthur, who many NBA scouts have listed as a top ten pick in next summer’s draft. McDonald’s All-American, 6’11’’ center Cole Aldrich, is easily one of the top recruits in the nation. Self is expecting him to contribute immediately. Kansas’ backcourt is what really sets this team apart as no other school in the country can claim the same mix of talent, experience, and depth. Robinson played point for the Jays last season, but Self is big on Sherron Collins and feels this kid will be an All-American candidate. Chalmers is deadly from behind the stripe and about as clutch a player as you’ll find. Rush is one of the best all-around players in the country and maybe the best defender.
The pieces are in place. Bill Self has assembled a team capable of winning a national title. It would be KU’s first since 1988. They need to get it done this year because as many as four underclassmen could move on to the NBA after this season.
