2008 SEC College Football PredictionsThe SEC looks to be the toughest conference in the country once again. Find out who Jeff Alexander has sitting on top of it in his 2008 SEC College Football predictions.

SEC East

1st Place - Georgia Bulldogs: +200 to win SEC at BetUS.com

Georgia is the most complete team in the SEC with a mature Matt Stafford at QB and a Heisman Trophy caliber running back in Knowshon Moreno. The only thing going against the Dawgs is a schedule which includes Arizona State, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Georgia Tech. My prediction is that the most complete team in the SEC, and perhaps the country, will find a way to win those tough games, and take the SEC Championship.

2nd Place – Florida Gators: +250 to win SEC at BetUS.com

Heisman Trophy winning QB Tim Tebow and big play wideout Percy Harvin will be a lethal combo in Urban Meyer’s spread option attack once again. The defense will be improved, but a lack of depth in the front seven will likely stand in the way of an SEC title.

3rd Place – Tennessee Volunteers: +800 to win SEC at BetUS.com

Tennessee will be competitive, but there’s no way that it can come out on top in this tough division. There is talent at receiver and running back, but the team will greatly miss QB Erik Ainge running the show. This team won’t be strong enough at stopping the run to really excel,

4th Place – South Carolina Gamecocks: +1200 to win SEC at BetUS.com

With the worst run defense in the SEC, good offenses will be able to pick the Gamecocks apart. Kenny McKinley is one of the best receivers in the league, but he won’t be able to make enough plays to single handedly win S.C.’s toughest games.

5th Place – Kentucky Wildcats: +4000 to win SEC at BetUS.com

The loss of star QB Andre Woodson has oddsmakers picking Kentucky near the bottom of the barrel. It also doesn’t help that the Cats ranked last in the league in scoring defense in 2007 and they aren’t going to be able to out score teams this season.

6th Place – Vanderbilt Commodores: +5000 to win SEC at BetUS.com

Six starters return from the fourth best defense in the SEC and the school’s best in a decade. They’ll have to rely on that defense again because the offense was 11th in the league in total yards a season ago. To add insult to injury, the Commodores will go to battle without star wide receiver Earl Bennett who turned pro early.

SEC West

1st Place – LSU Tigers: +400 to win SEC at BetUS.com

A slew of talent remains for the defending national champs, but a defense which lost six quality players, including Glenn Dorsey, and major QB issues could hold this team back. The Tigers should still sit atop a weak SEC West with a shot at Georgia in the SEC title game.

2nd Place – Auburn Tigers: +250 to win SEC at BetUS.com

Oddsmakers like Auburn to finish ahead of LSU in the West, but that all depends on how quickly it adjusts to two new coordinators and a new spread option no-huddle offense. Without a reliable signal caller established, I don’t think Auburn can get it done.

3rd Place – Alabama Crimson Tide: +650 to win SEC at BetUS.com

The Tide returns 15 starters so we should see even more improvement in year two under head coach Nick Saban. More young talent is coming as Alabama is starting to win more and more SEC recruiting wars. You won’t see the same late season collapse as last year. Another mediocre season is likely, but brighter days are soon ahead.

4th Place – Mississippi State Bulldogs: +3000 to win SEC at BetUS.com

Mississippi State won four of its last five games a season ago to reach the eight win mark. However, virtually nothing was done to improve an offense which ranked last in the SEC in 2007. The Bulldogs defense will keep them in games again, but they don’t have enough offense to beat the SEC’s elite.

5th Place – Ole Miss Rebels: +6500 to win SEC at BetUS.com

The Rebels could challenge for a bowl game, but they lack talented offensive skill players to compete with the SEC’s best. Still, Houston Nutt was a great hire and I have no doubts that he will bring winning football to Ole Miss once again.

6th Place – Arkansas Razorbacks: +5000 to win SEC at BetUS.com

There’s only one place to go after losing three players like Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Marcus Monk, and it’s not up. Bobby Petrino will make this program a winner, but it won’t be until after he gets a chance to hit the recruiting trail hard.
