NCAA Football Picks: Another loss in front of the home crowd of over 108,000-plus last week as Michigan dropped another home game to Utah, 25-23.  New Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez is trying to fit square pegs into round holes on offense with personnel not ideally suited to his version of the spread offense.  The defense will continue to play ultra-inspired ball to help protect that currently very lousy transitioning offense.  A year ago, Appalachian State stunned the Wolverines.  But this was more businesslike than shocking. The Utes were just a three-point underdog and received more votes than Michigan in The Associated Press preseason NCAA picks poll.  I suspected that the Wolverines would struggle offensively, as West Virginia did in Rodriguez’ first year in Morgantown, but I didn’t expect just 203 yards at 3.2 yards per play.  The Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com currently have Michigan -14.5 favorites to Miami (Ohio) with the total at 40 points.

At least the Miami-OH defense won’t have to deal with a QB like Chris Nickson of Vanderbilt, who ran around and through them last Thursday night.  Miami lost to them last week in their home opener, 34-13.  Redhawks coach Montgomery to Rich Rodriguez: ‘We’ve seen your offense when we played Cincinnati in ’06 and Central Michigan in ’07 and frankly, they do it better than you do right now.  Utah has a great defense, but 3.2 yards per play is much worse than I expected and is a sign that Michigan could be in for a long season.
