Triple Crown Picks: Big Brown gallops Wednesday at Belmont Park (05-28-08) Big Brown galloped 1 1/8 miles around Belmont Park's main track Wednesday morning, first work out since they found out he had a crack in his left front foot.  Big Brown is preparing for a start in the June 7 Belmont Stakes, where he will attempt to become thoroughbred racing's 12th Triple Crown picks winner.  Nevin, the exerciser rider said "When we went out on the track, he was bouncing a little bit; I didn't want him to be too strong or try and do too much, but he was very good.  The first furlong he was a little rough, then he just settled right down, slowly relaxed, and let go of the bit."

The quarter crack is not the end of the world for him, but I can see why they're worried.  The word is money, thats all that matters to them.  These are greedy people.  I really think the crack in his front hoof is really not a big deal.  Still the big tale is Casino Drive, Big Brown's major Belmont Stakes contender,  I think at the Belmont you will receive 2/5 odds on Big Brown and about 5-1 or 6-1 on Casino Drive.  If Big Brown wins, PETA will likely step in on involuntary doping grounds as Big Brown is injected once a month with stanozolol.  Interesting development Wednesday as Edgar Prado is going to ride Casino Drive in the Belmont.  Impressive rider with 6,000 race victories and the spoiler of two to try Triple Crown picks as he rode Sarava in 2002 (beat War Emblem), and Birdstone in 2004 (beat Smarty Jones).  It adds a little intrigue so we will see how it plays out.

Ian McKinlay, the hoof lameness specialist who has cared for Big Brown's quarter crack said, "As far as patching, we'll come back Friday.  Hopefully that skin will dry out and come off on its own.  We're trying to stay out of the way and let nature take its course."   Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. didn't talk to reporters on Wednesday as he let McKinlay do the talking.
