Belmont pick Denis of Cork is a potential Triple Crown spoiler in the Belmont Stakes. The connections are trying to pull off a big up set in the Belmont Stakes. By virtue of graded stakes earnings, Denis of Cork was the final horse to earn a spot in the Derby starting gate. At odds of better than 27-1, he surprised with a third-place finish. His carrer record is: 5-3-0-1. Did you know, Denis of Cork is named after Rev. Denis Casey from County Cork, Ireland, and is a friend of owner William Warren. After skipping the Preakness, Denis of Cork is a relatively fresh horse, and from the looks of his sharp interim works he seems to have come out of the Derby in excellent shape. The Early morning lines at SportsBook.com shows Dennis of Cork at 10 to 1 odds to upset the Triple Crown.
Denis of Cork finished 3rd in the Kentucky Derby to Big Brown and Eight Belles. He went of 27 to 1 that day. When the starting gate broke at the Derby he went right to the rail, he advanced between rivals with about 3 furlongs to go in the race. Then he moved back to the inside coming to the top of the stretch improved his position while not really a threat. He lacks speed and will be closing, as he will need a fast pace to close into. He won't be much of a threat to Big Brown as he is just a much better horse. Denis of Cork jockey will be Robby Alvarado who has earned riding titles at the Fair Grounds, Arlington Park and Oaklawn Park. Through Dec. 31, 2007, he was ranked second (behind Garrett Gomez) nationally in earnings with $19,399,249. In 2007, Albarado had 253 wins from 1,260 mounts. He then scored his first Breeders’ Cup win aboard Curlin in the 2007 Classic. Albarado has ridden in nine Derbys, including back-to-back third place finishes in 2006 (aboard Steppenwolfer) and 2007 (aboard Curlin). He has been the leading rider at Arlington Park, Fair Grounds (six times), Keeneland (twice) and Oaklawn Park (twice).
