Belmont Stakes Predictions: 40 to 1 longshot Guadalcanal Betting Odds Preview (06-05-08)A big longshot contender in the Belmont Stakes is Guadalcanal.  He has 5 starts for his career without a win.  His career record is: 5-0-2-1.  Guadalcanal, who has yet to break his maiden in five career starts, was a surprise entry in the June 7 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) when entries were taken Wednesday.  Trainer Seitz has this to say about entering.  “He was bred for a route, he trains like he will want a route, and there are not many opportunities to race against 3-year-olds at 1 ½ miles.  If we are on the board, we will be happy. To me, it’s all about the distance, the trip, and who can get 1 ½ miles,” Seitz said. “He could probably go farther.”

On 5/23 he raced at Churchill Downs where he finished 2nd at 4 to 1.  With five furlongs to go moved between rivals near the three furlong marker, dropped to the inside while approaching the stretch and got up to get the place money.  He will be a huge price at the window, might even be 99-1.  If he were to win this race it would have to be the biggest upset in Belmont history.

Jockey Javier Castellano, the rider of Guadalcanal won his first Breeders’ Cup race on his only mount in 2004, guiding Ghostzapper to victory in the Classic at Lone Star Park. Twice he has won five races on one card at Saratoga.  He accomplished the feat on Sept. 7, 2004 and in 2005 on Sept. 3, which included an upset on Mass Media in the Forego Stakes.  Castellano earned his first Classic win with Bernardini in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, a race marred by the breakdown of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.  Barbaro was ridden by Castellano in all of his starts.
