Belmont Stakes: Big Brown draws postpistioun #1 for Belmont Stakes (06-05-08) Big Brown will try for the Triple Crown Saturday for postposition number #1 at the Belmont Stakes.  When post positions 1, 3 and 5 were left, Belmont Park announcer Tom Durkin, conducting the draw, asked Big Brown's trainer, Rick Dutrow, which of those posts he would most like. He said post 5, which immediately went to Casino Drive for the Belmont Stakes. The post could be a lucky one for an undefeated colt that really doesn't need any extra edge.  If Jockey Kent Desormeaux wants Big Brown to go fast right out of the gate he will do that.  He has won on the lead wire to wire faction 3 times and two from off the pace. Whether Desormeaux will choose to do that is unclear.

Big Brown has raced four times on dirt.  The colt, going for the first Triple Crown in 30 years, has hit it every time.  For those of you who only follow two or three races a year, keep in mind that Big Brown's Florida Derby win was just made to look so much better last weekend when Smooth Air, runner-up to Big Brown in the Florida Derby smoked the field in the G2 Ohio Derby on Saturday.  Smooth Air also handily defeated a "worthy" KY Derby buzz horse, Z Fortune, in that race.  Big Brown was installed as the early 2-5 favorite against nine rivals Wednesday for the grueling 1½-mile race.

The too over confident trainer Rick Dutrow had to say this to the media after the post draw. "I just can't see a post getting him beat.  I couldn't be happier with the horse. He knows something is coming; he knows it's soon." H e went on to say "The horse is doing great. Everybody has seen him run. He's beaten mostly every horse in the race with ease.  We've got a couple of newcomers.  I don't think they add too much."
We all know New York trainers like Dutrow, they know what he does to his horses, stuff he gives them.  This field will try to make it very tough on his horse, drawing the rail isn't good for him.  They will pin him down on the rail, muscle him, try to push him around.  He won't have a loose half mile lead, however with this being said, he is the best horse on paper in a very very poor 3 yr. old crop.
