The Belmont betting odds favorite, Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown will go from post 1 and run for the Triple Crown. He has had outside posts leading up to the Belmont Stakes and will attempt to win for the first time from a inside post at Belmont. He is the first horse since 1915 to win the Derby after only three lifetime starts, and only the second winner in history to break from post position 20. Big Brown's Record: 5-5-0-0, has never lost a race to date. The colt silenced his critics, proving in the Kentucky Derby that inexperience and lack of a true route pedigree were not to be a factor in his Triple Crown bid. In the Derby he started from way outside, post #20, rated off the early pace 4 wide, advanced into the five path and when he was ready, after 5 furlongs ranged outside and drew away. Looking to make some money in the race using Big Brown you better put some long shots behind him in your exotic wagers. The early morning lines at SportsBook.com shows Big Brown holding with 1 to 3 betting odds as he attempts to make Triple Crown history!
Big Brown has dominated his rivals in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Other than for a brief period in each of the first two legs of the Triple Crown, he has never been asked for his best. Kent Desormeaux ran a brilliant race at Pimlico. He literally turned the speed on and off when he needed to throughout the race. He paced him extremely well and then let him go down the stretch. I've never seen a horse pull away and finish like that. It was simply remarkable. And then, when it was over, Big Brown looked like he still had quite a bit left in the tank. There's no reason to think that he can't handle the extra quarter mile or so. I know the Triple Crown is rare, but this could be the year. It won't be easy, and it's not guaranteed for Big Brown. But it's possible. The one thing that Big Brown has going for him over Smarty Jones is that Kent Desormeaux is more experienced that Stewart Elliot who by not riding Smarty Jones correctly cost him the Triple Crown. Big Brown is versatile enough to take the lead and should be able to adjust to any situation that presents itself. I watched Curlin at Oaklawn win the Arkansas Derby and he has done nothing but improve. However, I think Big Brown has improved more in a shorter number of races. I like Big Brown because he has already shown he can run on the turf. Great horses can run on any surface. I agree that the field Big Brown is running against are not the strongest. But that's not his fault. Casino Drive will be a tough test, currently his Belmont betting odds are 5 to 2 as I look at todays lines. Big Brown is no Secretariat by any means, but he's a damn fine race horse. The Triple Crown doesn't happen all that often, I know a ton of people would love to see him do it so they can tell their kids/grandkids they saw a Triple Crown winner. I don't think anything will be as painful as watching Real Quiet lose by a nose in the Belmont Stakes and not get the Triple Crown, that one still stings. Jockey Kent Desormeaux will be aboard once again on Big Brown. He has three Breeders’ Cup victories: the 1993 Turf with Kotashaan, the 1995 Sprint with Desert Stormer and the 2007 Dirt Mile with Corinthian. In 1998, he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with Real Quiet then lost the Triple Crown sweep when they were nosed out by Victory Gallop in the Belmont Stakes. He also won the 2000 and 2008 Kentucky Derby with Fusaichi Pegasus and Big Brown, respectively. He has won riding titles at Oak Tree, Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Del Mar, Laurel, Pimlico and in Tokyo, Japan. He is one of four jockeys to win three consecutive national victory titles, 1987-1989.
