What a duel down the stretch in the 128th running of the Alabama Stakes on Saturday between Proud Spell and Music Note. At the end it was Proud Spell who prevailed by a head to beat the 2-5 favorite Music Note. Proud Spell, broke well from the gate and went out to challenge Music Note's entry-mate, on the lead. Jockey Gabriel Saez, then just stalked from second around the race track behind Music Note, around the final turn Saez made the lead with Proud Spell quickly and then rider Javier Castellano of Music Note quickly took over second and made a run at the lead. The two fillies battled down the stretch with Proud Spell prevailing by a head over Music Note. After the race, yhe trainer of Proud Spell said "This filly of ours had never been passed down the stretch the entire time we've had her,''. Proud Spell now added another stakes victory to her record as she has won the Kentucky Oaks, Delaware Oaks, and Fair Grounds Oaks. "I told Gabriel, 'Do not let Music Note in front,' '' Jones said. "I don't care if you have to ride all the way to the barn area, down Nelson Avenue, she don't get in front. Because if you come up to Proud Spell and eyeball her, you don't beat her.'' For the race they picked up a big check $360,000. This filly has now won 11 lifetime races for $1,975,110. | # | Horse | Jockey | Weight | Win | Place | Show | | 2 | Proud Spell | Saez G | 121 | 5.90 | 2.60 | | | 1 | Music Note | Castellano J J | 121 | | 2.10 | | | 1A | Little Belle | Maragh R | 121 | | 2.10 | | On Monday at Saratoga they will run the Union Avenue Stakes in the 9th race for Fillies and Mares 3 Year Olds And Up in a 6 furlongs sprint.
