The Atlanta Braves will turn to John Smoltz on Wednesday in an attempt to keep their fading playoff hopes alive. Smoltz is 13-7 on the season with an ERA of 3.02. He will be opposed by John Maine who is 14-9 and has an ERA of 3.80. SBG Global reports that early betting has the public taking the favored Braves on the Road.

Smoltz had a no-hitter going into the eight inning in his last start against Washington before Ronnie Belliard singled. Smoltz has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his past seven starts. He is 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA in five starts against the Mets this year.
Maine has been good against the Braves this season. He held the Braves to just one run on three hits in a start late last month. He struggled in his last start against Cincinnati though, giving up six runs and nine hits in just 4 1/3 innings.
The Braves have been missing Chipper Jones of late. He did not play in Monday’s game against New York and was also not in the starting lineup on Tuesday. He made a throw in batting practice that caused the pain. "I don't know what the timetable is going to be," Jones said. "It could be a couple days. It could be a week. I'm just going to have to take it day-by-day and see how it is. It was extremely painful when I did it, and it's sore right now." Jones is fourth in the National League with a .330 batting average. The Braves are 62-54 in the games that he's started this year. They're 11-17 in the games that he has missed. In other notes, Andrew Jones missed Monday’s game but was back in the lineup on Tuesday.

The Braves have seen their hopes of making the playoffs dwindle in recent weeks but they are still alive. The Wild Card is the reason why, since they have no chance of catching the Mets for the division title. "I love the Wild Card," general manager John Schuerholz said. "I always have. The Mets will be missing Carlos Delgado at least until next week. Manager Willie Randolph didn't expect to have Delgado back in the lineup until next week at the earliest. "I want to have a positive attitude," Delgado said. "But I don't want to trick myself into doing anything really stupid, which is going out there when you're not ready."
