So far the Seattle Mariners have not received much of a return in their off-season investment in RHP Jeff Weaver. Coming off the 15 day DL, Weaver (0-6, 14.32 ERA) will be looking for his first win when he faces the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. In his career, Weaver is 1-2 with a 7.88 ERA in his three career appearances there.
"I'm just eager and anxious to get back out there and do what I know I can do," Weaver said Friday afternoon. Going for the Padres is veteran LHP David Wells (3-3, 4.79 ERA) among active pitchers, the 44-year-old left-hander is the third-winningest lefty, behind only Tom Glavine and Randy Johnson. Wells has 233 career victories, 11 of them against the Mariners, who have beaten him 11 times. This will be his 29th career start against Seattle. Mariner’s outfielder Ichiro Suzuki has been a pain for Wells, going 7-for-16 against the portly southpaw, a cool .438 pace. This might be a good spot for the Mariners to play Jose Vidro at first base. The switch-hitter is 5-for-14 against Wells, while regular first baseman Ritchie Sexson is 3-for-17. The Mariners won the first game of the three-game weekend series after Raul Ibanez 11th inning home run to break the 5-5 deadlock at 6-5 in front of 44,425 fans, the largest home crowd for San Diego this season.
Oddsmakers almost always set the total for low scores in games at Petco Park and tonight’s game is no different with the total installed at 8 ½ . Considered a pitchers park, Petco has developed a reputation for low scoring games but tonights OVER 8 ½ looks like a great value , especially with Jeff Weaver on the mound for Seattle. And considering the fact the Mariners have enjoyed success against David Wells in the past you can expect the M’s to score some runs. Combining both hurlers, this game has the potential to explode on the scoreboard. One can expect the bullpens for both clubs to get plenty of work. The early betting trend shows 91% of the early money looking for the total to go OVER. The Padres are installed the favorite with a money line cost of -153 while the Mariners are getting +142 ml juice . The early money loves the Padres with 94% of the public betting against the Mariners. |
