The Cardinals head south today to face a tough Florida Marlins team. St. Louis comes off a Sunday night 6-2 loss at the hands of the Chicago Cubs. The Marlins, meanwhile, headed home from Shea Stadium yesterday after having beat the Mets 8-2 in the series finale. The Marlins just completed a six game road stretch where they took two out of three from the Phillies, but dropped two out of three to the Mets. They now find themselves a half a game back from the Mets and 2.5 back from Philadelphia. It is imperative for Florida to perform well in their upcoming four game set with St. Louis if they are to stay in the division race.
Florida will send 24 year old Anibal Sanchez to the hill tonight. Sanchez just recently returned from the DL and has only two starts this season. He is 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Tonight will be the first time that Sanchez, who tossed a no hitter as rookie in 2006, has ever faced the Cardinals.
St. Louis is also mired in a division race, but their prospects of catching the Cubs are growing dimmer by the day. They just lost two out of three to Chicago and now sit seven games behind their bitter rival and three games back of Milwaukee. Tonight's game will be the fourth game in a 10 game road swing for St. Louis. Starter Joel Pineiro will counter Sanchez tonight while he looks to hold down a potent Marlins lineup. Pineiro sits at 4-5 on the year with a 5.04 ERA and 53 strikeouts to 25 walks.
