Tonight the Cardinals and Phillies play the rubber match in a three game set in St. Louis. The Cardinals pulled out a 6-3 victory in game one of the series behind the arm of Kyle Lohse. The Phillies, however, responded last night by getting a 2-1 victory as new acquistion Joe Blanton turned in a masterful performance. Both teams find themselves in the thick of division races as the season barrels toward an end. The Phillies sit atop the NL East after surviving a torrid stretch by the Mets; however, their lead is tenuous as the pesky Marlins are just a game back and the Mets two games out. They have held both teams at bay by winning six of their last eight games. The Cardinals, on the other hand, are five games back of the NL Central leading Cubs and a game behind the second place Brewers. St. Louis will need solid play down the stretch to stay in it, but they showed some serious moxie in rebounding from a five game slide to win five of their last eight. The Phillies send Bret Myers to the hill tonight and he has been anything but a sure thing. Injury issues and inconsistency earned him some time in the minors earlier this year, but he has found his way back to the big league club. He turned in his best performance of the year in his lasting outing, going seven innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs in a 2-1 victory over the Nationals. The Cardinals will counter with righty Todd Wellemeyer. The Kentucky native is 8-4 this year with a 4.13 ERA. For the most part he has been consistent, but he did have a few rough outings in the middle of July. The Cardinals will need his best effort this eveing if they are to keep a potent Philly lineup quiet for two night in a row.
