For the 11th time in the history of the NBA, the Lakers and Celtics will play for the NBA championship. To celebrate this storied NBA rivalry, Sportsbook.com has posted “Old School vs. New School” props that allow the NBA bettor to wager on the stars of past Lakers/Celtics rivalries. This time last year, no sane person on the planet would have envisioned these two teams meeting up in the finals. After all, the Celtics opened at 100-1 long shots, while the Lakers were a generous 50-1. Thanks to a few blockbuster trades and their rivalry, we now have an NBA Finals that could be the most watched and bet on in years. Even though these two teams have met for the title ten times, the Lakers have won only twice . However, those two times were the last two times they played (’85, 87). Opening up at -200 to win the series, it appears as if Sportsbook.com handicappers feel the Lakers will make it three in a row over the Celtics (+160). Many believe the Celtics have decent value here considering they have home court advantage throughout the Finals. Just like the 80’s both teams have contrasting styles. The Lakers will want to get out and run as evidenced by their 108.6 PPG average, while the Celtics will look to slow things down behind a defense that allowed just 90.3 PPG.
