The Chicago Bulls struck gold in NBA Draft 2008 (05-21-08)The Chicago Bulls struck gold Tuesday evening as they landed the first pick in next month’s NBA Draft despite having less than a 2% chance to win the weighted lottery. Plenty of Sportsbook.com members cashed in on the lofty 40-1 odds offered for the Bulls getting the first pick

Considering Chicago made it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in 2007, yet could only muster up a 33-49 record this year, Tuesday night’s lottery finally gave Bulls’ fans a reason to be excited. After all, they will have their choice at what many scouts consider are two ‘can’t miss’ prospects: Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose.

Prior to the NCAA Tournament , most believed Beasley would be the ‘no brainer’ first selection. The 6’10” freshman power forward was an absolute beast for Kansas State all season long, scoring 26.2 points while hauling in 12.4 rebounds per game.

Thanks to Rose’s dominant performance during the month of March, Beasley is now the slight underdog to hear his name called first on June 26th. The 6’3” Rose had a tremendous rookie campaign averaging 14.9 points and 4.7 assists on the ultra-talented Memphis squad. However, it was his performance during the Tournament when heads really started to turn with regards to his ability. Averaging 20.8 points, 6.5 boards and 6 assists; Rose not only showed off his great basketball skills but also his ability to take over a game along with his great athleticism.

So, will Chicago take a franchise type power forward or a franchise type point guard is the question. In Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas, Chicago has a couple very young power forward types that are full of promise. Their point guard situation is a little less clear as veteran Kirk Hinrich struggled last season, averaging about 5 points fewer than he did the year before. But one thing is for sure: Chicago will have the opportunity to add a likely perennial All Star to their roster come late June.
