Betting on the Super Bowl Coaches (01-25-2008)

The best coaches find a way to get their team to the Super Bowl, period. There is no other measure of Super Bowl greatness . The coaches who have been able to win the Super Bowl are put into an elite category and those which have been able to win more than one Super Bowl have a place reserved in Canton. Oddsmakers at BetOnline.com currently have the Super Bowl odds set favoring Bill Belichick as the 12pt fav for your Super Bowl spread bets .

Both head coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots and Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants have experienced Super Bowl success. Bill Belichick is the more accomplished of the two having led the New England Patriots to three Super Bowl titles. Many forget that Belichick spent 12 seasons with the New York Giants as an assistant. He was a part of both Super Bowl teams at New York under coach Bill Parcells and his defensive game plan used to upset the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV is now in the Hall of Fame.

Tom Coughlin is also a product of the Bill Parcells New York Giants. As an assistant, he helped lead the Giants to a victory in Super Bowl XXV. Coughlin later went on to be the first head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars leading them to the AFC Championship game twice. His success at New York in his younger years earned him a job and now he has the Giants just one win away from hoisting the Lombardi Trophy .

Let’s take a look at some of the greatest Super Bowl coaches. Vince Lombardi led the Green Bay Packers to decisive victories in the first two Super Bowls to land his famous name on the Championship trophy. Chuck Noll led the Pittsburgh Steelers to an unprecedented four Super Bowl championships. Don Shula won two Super Bowls as coach of the Miami Dolphins and has the undefeated 1972 season on his boast list. Tom Landry won two titles with the Dallas Cowboys, Bill Walsh led the San Francisco 49ers to three, and Tom Flores won two at Oakland. The great Bill Parcells won his two Super Bowls with the Giants, Joe Gibbs won three with the Redskins, and Jimmy Johnson and Mike Shanahan won two each with the Cowboys and Broncos respectively.

As you can see, many of the greatest coaches win the big one more than once. Perhaps, that is because getting one under your belt gives you a big advantage. Does that mean that Belichick will have the advantage over Coughlin in Super Bowl XLII? Find out how big of a role the coaches will play in this year’s Super Bowl in Dave Price’s Super Bowl picks analysis.
