NFL Divisional Playoffs Giants/Cowboys Betting Preview! (01-11-2008)
New York looked very efficient being the best NFL pick in their eighth road game of the year in last weeks NFC Wild Card win/cover over Tampa Bay. The Cowboys better be ready for a strong defense, a tough running game and a team that is looking to go 9-1 on the road this season. Dallas won and covered both meetings this year, but before that, the Giants had gone 5-0-1 ATS in the previous three seasons. Eli Manning threw for 185 yards with a pair of touchdown passes for the Giants, while Brandon Jacobs rushed for 34 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown and caught a TD pass in the win. While the Cowboys lost to Washington 27-6 as a 9-point underdog in Week 17. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (39). Tony Romo completed 7-of-16 passes for 86 yards with an interception for Dallas and Sam Hurd caught three passes for 64 yards. Taking a look at the lines early Saturday morning SportsBetting.com has the Dallas Cowboys pegged as the 7.5 pt favorite for this Sunday NFL playoff matchup.

Cowboys listed as 7½-point favorites versus the Giants
Total is sitting at 47

Team records:
New York: 10-6 SU, 10-6 ATS
Dallas: 13-3 SU, 9-7 ATS

Dallas leads the overall series 54-35-2, but this is the first time the teams have ever met in the playoffs. In their first match up this season, the Cowboys offense destroyed the Giants defense, that was still learning their new coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's system. Dallas had 476 yards and 6 touchdowns. In the second game, the Giants defense once again could not stop quarterback Tony Romo (20 of 28, 323 yards, 4 TDs), while Eli Manning threw two interceptions in the Giants lose.

The Cowboys finished second in the league with 455 points and were fourth in passing, averaging 256.6 yards. Tony Romo (335 of 520, 4,211 yards, 36 TDs, 19 INTs) was one of seven QBs to throw for 4,000 yards. His favorite target was Pro-Bowl receiver Terrell Owens (81 catches, 1,344 yards, 15 TDs), and tight end Jason Witten (96 catches, 1,145 yards, 7 TDs). However, Terrell Owens sustained a high ankle sprain Dec. 22 and may not be able to play (see my recent injury report below)...

The Giants' success on offense depends on avoiding mistakes. They have hurt themselves this season with turnovers (20 interceptions, 14 fumbles) and dropped passes. For the Giants to win straight or cover, they will need to keep Romo and his crew on the sidelines with clock management. New York's rushing attack ranked 4th overall this season, averaging 134.2 yards per game. The power-house style of Brandon Jacobs (1,009 yards, 4 TDs) has been complemented by the emergence of a future superstar in rookie Ahmad Bradshaw...

The Cowboys defense will try to pressure Manning with powerful defense that had 46 sacks this season, which was 3rd in the NFL. Their pressure forced 19 interceptions this year. Cowboys also finished sixth against the run this season, allowing only an average of 94.6 yards per game. Cowboys' fierce pass-rush tandem of DeMarcus Ware and Greg Ellis could also put him on his back. The Giants Defense will have to really pressure Romo. In the previous two games against Dallas this season, the Giants, who led the NFL with 53 sacks and were 7th in overall defense (305 yards), got to Romo just twice. The secondary has improved some, but they won't keep up with a "healthy" Owens and Witten if Romo has time in the pocket...

Dallas' Wade Phillips is searching for his first playoff win as a head coach, while New York's Tom Coughlin finally got his first postseason victory with the Giants. Innovative offensive coordinator Jason Garrett may have something up his sleeve for the Cowboys. In my opinion, the Garrett vs. Spagnuolo match-up is the key to this game. Both of these coordinators will make very good head coaches in the very near future...

What you'll need to know before placing your wager: Terrell Owens health, like him or not, at just 75% he is still better than 80% of the wide receivers in the league. The rest factor, it hurt Tampa Bay last week even at home. The Defensive packages that both teams will use. Their run versus pass percentage for the clock control when playing the total. If your not sure of any of these questions, purchase Michael McKillop's premium pay selections. I will be selecting the winning side, moneyline, and total bet for this game...
