Adu Debuts, Beckham to Play Freddy Adu made his European debut Tuesday when he came in as a first half substitute for Benfica of Portugal during its 2-1 win over FC Copenhagen in Champions League action. Adu came into the game about 10 minutes before the half. Benfica coach Fernando Santos had said he wanted to take it slowly with Adu who missed all of Benfica's preseason games. The crowd of 55,000 at the Stadium of Light loudly cheered when Adu entered the game. Adu made some nice quick passes and set up Oscar Cardozo for a great chance that was just denied. Adu is one of the most well known players in Major League Soccer. MLS and Benfica agreed at the end of last month to a $2 million transfer fee for Adu. In 2003 D.C. United signed Adu, making him the youngest player in MLS history. Bet on D.C United at SBG Global Bet on Soccer at Sbgglobal.com
In other soccer news, David Beckham has said that he expects to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in their game Wednesday. The Galaxy face D.C. United in the SuperLiga tournament semifinals. The teams played last week in an MLS game that the Galaxy lost 1-0. Beckham came into the game as a substitute and played the last 21 minutes. He should be a big lift to the Galaxy on Wednesday. "It's not perfect yet, but I think I can at least play half a game tomorrow,” Beckham said. “It still feels unstable to a certain extent, but it feels stable enough to actually play in a game and see how far I can take it." Wednesday night would be the first start for Beckham since signing his five-year, $32.5 million dollar deal. He made his MLS debut last Thursday but did not play in Sunday’s game at New England. "He's not going to last the game out because of his fitness level," coach Frank Yallop said. "Do you want to start the game with him or do you want to end the game with him? We ended the game with him in D.C. and we started to actually put them under quite a bit of pressure. Maybe we can think about that. I'd rather maybe have him at the end of the game." Beckham is also hoping to play in Saturday’s MLS game at New York as well. If that goes as planned then he will look at playing in England’s August 22nd exhibition game against Germany.
