David Beckham will make his LA Galaxy debut on Saturday against a familiar foe in a friendly-match between the Galaxy and Chelsea FC of the English Premier League. The Blues [Chelsea] are the arch-rivals of Manchester United, one of Beckham’s former teams. The game will be broadcast by ESPN. Betting lines for the Galaxy-Chelsea match have not been installed but there is no question the Galaxy will be heavy home underdogs. The game will be played on the Galaxy’s home field, the sold-out 27,000 seat Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Chelsea completed its first match of an American tour with a 2-1 result over Team-America at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California on Saturday. After a slow start, the Blues dug in and earned the win after late goals from skipper John Terry and debutant Florent Malouda. Despite there being some tired legs after the first pre-season game of the campaign, everybody was pleased, and a lot of positives can be taken from the game, such as new boy Malouda's sparkling performance.
While David Beckham might not be able to turn the LA Galaxy around all by himself, he is doing all he can to boost his new teams confidence in its abilities. Mired near the cellar of the MLS Western Division, next to last place, Beckham is using his old team, Real Madrid as a comparison. "It's not just about one player in the team. It's always been about 11 players and more than 11. It proved that in 1999 when we won three trophies for Manchester United and last year for Real Madrid. I came off and then Jose Antonio Reyes, who hadn't played for a few games, came on and won the game, and we won the title." |
