Is David Beckham enough to launch MLS into the limelight? For you American soccer fans (few of you as there are) a whirlwind has landed in the city of Los Angeles in the name of David Beckham. And I am told this Beckham dude is expected to be the savior of the sport in the USA. Not that the sport of soccer needs saving in this country. Something must exist before it can be saved.

I know, we have MLS (that stands for Major League Soccer) but tell me this. How many Americans would be able to list from memory half of the teams by name who play in the league?

Arriving with Beckham is his wife Victoria Beckham, also known as Posh Spice. Ok, I’ll admit, I don’t know who Posh Spice is either but folks from Tinseltown are probably more familiar with her than her husband. I am also told Posh Spice is in the entertainment industry, something folks in LA should know plenty about. Please hold; a staffer is whispering in my ear…Posh Spice was (is?) a member of the pop group Spice Girls. Oh now I remember, the Spice girls of the 1990’s? I must apologize; I am unfamiliar with Beckham and Posh because I have been covering sports.

Don’t get me wrong, we love soccer. Our objective at Point-Spreads.com is to provide information surrounding betting odds on anything and that includes soccer. However, the real soccer is called football and it isn’t played in the USA. The football played in the USA will be kicking off in about six weeks and that is something we Americans are passionate about. Almost as passionate as the English are about their Premiership League (soccer)….OVER THERE… and that is where David Beckham belongs.

I don’t mean to sound like a cynic. There is nothing more I would like than for Beckham to turn American professional soccer on its ear. If Beckham and MLS can capture the imagination of the public (which I doubt) it would give the gambler an option to follow other than baseball, a sport we are stuck with from the end of the NBA playoffs until football kicks off in early September. I’m all for it! But I know the American sports fan too. The minute American football starts we will not give soccer a second notice.

Beckham will see full stadiums in the early going because we Yanks are a curious lot. But sooner than later, Beckham will be playing in front of empty seats and this is a man who likes attention. We’ll see what happens then.
