David Beckham will be part of the England team for their friendly on Wednesday against Germany but it is uncertain whether or not he will play. Beckham made his first Major League Soccer start on Saturday and played the entire game as the Los Angeles Galaxy lost 5-4 to the New York Red Bulls.

Beckham had two assists in the game but was seen limping on his left ankle at times. It remains to be seen whether he will be fit enough to play on Wednesday against Germany. "Only time will tell," he said. "I've got to see how it is on Sunday. It's swollen up at the moment but that was always going to happen. I'm traveling to London on Sunday morning to meet up with the team and hopefully I'll be playing some sort of role on Wednesday."
"I was surprised to actually play 90 minutes," Beckham said. "The manager and the coaching staff kept asking me if I wanted to come off. But I'm quite a stubborn person on and off the field. When we were winning I didn't want to come off and when we were losing I didn't want to come off. I think my stubbornness took over and I didn't want to come off the pitch."

Galaxy coach Frank Yallop is definitely worried about Beckham playing for England while still injured. "It's a FIFA date, if the player is fit and he gets called up, he has to go," he said. "But he wants to go." Beckham believes he can play for England and still play the next night when the Galaxy face Chivas. "I'm coming back (Wednesday night) and I'll be sleeping all the way on the plane, hopefully getting plenty of rest and able play some part of the Chivas game on Thursday. I think it’s important for me to get back and to be at the game. I'll definitely be there and hopefully I play some part in it."

Beckham has said that the travel will not affect his play for England or for the Galaxy. "I don't think it would affect my performance for my country nor the Galaxy," said Beckham, "I've handled the traveling pretty well so far. It's something that I've not being used to in my career. Playing in Europe, we've only had to travel an hour, two hours to play."
One person that doesn’t think Beckham can pull off the double duty is his former coach, Sir Bobby Robson. "I wouldn't want to say anything against David Beckham because he's a fine boy and has served our country well," Robson said, "At the end of last season there is no doubt he was one of the best 20 players we had in this country. "In the beginning, I would [pick him] to see how he goes. In the short term, he looks okay. But the longer he plays in America, with respect to the football being played there, the less competitive he will become. It is not the greatest level of football. The travel from Los Angeles to England and back again is tremendously difficult. He will lose the match sharpness he needs to play at the top level with England."
England’s Steven Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves are set to miss Wednesday’s game. Germany will be missing Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sami Khedira, Michael Ballack, Torsten Frings, Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez.
