WESTERN CONFERENCE No. 1 San Antonio (24-10) vs. No. 3 Los Angeles (20-14) Los Angeles missed out on the postseason a year ago, the Sparks are back in the conference finals for the second time in three years... Los Angeles closed the regular season with six wins in its last eight games, and then outlasted Seattle in three games in the first round. Candace Parker, likely to win the league's Rookie of the Year award, had 20 points in the decisive Game 3 win and averaged 13.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg in the series. Leslie, the league's Defensive Player of the Year added 12.0 ppg and 9.7 rpg. The Sparks appear to be jelling at the right time after struggling at times during the season despite getting Leslie (15.0 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 2.9 bpg) back and adding Parker (18.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 3.4 apg). DeLisha Milton-Jones (13.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg) also returned to Los Angeles after three seasons in Washington. With the three Olympians in the frontcourt , the Sparks led the league in rebounding (37.7) and blocks (6.4), and were fifth in scoring (76.4). Los Angeles' struggles were largel y attributed to inconsistency in the backcourt, as Temeka Johnson, Shannon Bobbitt and Kiesha Brown combined to average 13.3 points and 8.4 assists. Parker averaged 21.3 ppg and 10.5 rpg and Leslie added 12.5 ppg and 10.0 rpg in the regular-season matchups against San Antonio. The Silver Stars reached the conference finals for the second straight year after outlasting Sacramento in overtime in Game 3 of their first-round series. San Antonio outscored the Monarchs 17-12 in the extra period to take an 86-81 win on Monday. Becky Hammon and Sophia Young (are nasty), the Silver Stars' top scorers in the regular season , led the way against Sacramento with averages of 19.3 ppg and 19.0 ppg. San Antonio set a franchise record for victories and won the West largely due to going 14-0 against the East. The Silver Stars were also the only team with a winning road record (9-8), and they won the first-round opener at Sacramento as well. Hammon (17.6 ppg, 4.9 apg) and Young (17.5 ppg, 5.6 rpg) led the way with MVP-caliber seasons. San Antonio was also bolstered by the addition of center Ann Wauters (14.7 ppg, 7.5 rpg), who returned to the league after sitting out two years. With a strong inside-outside game, the three accounted for about two-thirds of the team's sco ring. Veterans Erin Buescher (7.2 ppg), Vickie Johnson (6.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Ruth Riley (5.1 ppg) were strong complements. San Antonio was second in scoring defense (71.1) and had the third-best scoring differential (plus-3.76). Hammon averaged 17.0 ppg and 5.3 apg in the four meetings against the Sparks this season, and Wauters added 16.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Bet on WNBA Basketball at Betus.com
