The United States’ journey to regain Olympic Basketball Gold and bring it back to where it belongs is one step closer to that promise. After a highly contested first half, Team USA came out in the 3rd quarter determined to impose their will on Australia. The final score in this Beijing 2008 quarterfinal game between Australia vs. USA was 116-85. Consequently, Team USA will play the winner of the quarterfinal game between Argentina vs. Greece. Team USA satisfied the initial point spread, as they were a -31 betting odds favorites against Australia (+31). After a mediocre first half (to say the least), Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony opened the 3rd quarter by converting back-to-back 3’s to push the United States’ lead to 18 points.
Soon thereafter, a 14-0 run by the USA, delivered the knock out punch on the Aussies, pushing the American's lead to 26 points; it was pretty much garbage time from there on out.
Nevertheless, it took a complete team effort, as Kobe Bryant led the way for Team USA with 25 points, shooting 10-16 (63%) from the field, including 4-7 from 3-point territory (57%); LeBron James pitched in with 16 points, Melo added 15, Deron Williams and Chris Bosch had 10 each, and Wade and Howard scored 8 apiece.
Except for the free-throw department, Team USA dominated Australia in every facet of the game, as the numbers reflect the story: 43-76 (57%) shooting, 12-29 (41%) from downtown, 57 rebounds (19 off, 38 def.), 16 assists, 10 steals, and 3 blocked shots.
Here is the final box score for the Aussies: 30-70 (43%), 10-27 (37%), 15-25 (60%) free throws, 28 boards (8 off, 20 def.), 11 assists, 6 steals, 1 blocked shot. Team USA vs. Australia also satisfied the OVER/UNDER, which had been set at a total of 179 points.
NBA Side note: The Milwaukee Bucks perhaps have some reason for concern, as C Andrew Bogut (Australia) was sidelined early in the third, after twisting his ankle. Bogut did not come back, as his ankle was heavily tapped and iced on the Aussie’s bench. Bet on Sports at Sportsbook.com View NBA Basketball Betting Odds now! AlwaysHot's Smoking! The Chicago Bears will start Kyle Orton at quarterback this season and his first test as the main man comes in Thursday’s preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. Orton won the job over Rex Grossman, although neither player was overwhelming in their play this preseason. Orton is 12-6 as a starting quarterback for the Bears in his three seasons. “To come to a decision like that, we’ve taken a lot of things into consideration—last year, how we finished the season, OTAs, training camp, preseason games,” head coach Lovie Smith said. “In the end it comes down to a gut feeling that you have, and I feel good about Kyle leading our team.”
SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Bears at Home. NFL Preseason Betting Preview San Francisco 49ers at Chicago Bears Thursday, 8:00 pm Eastern – FOX
SBG Global Opening Line: Bears - 5 , Total 35
Chicago will get a long look at their new starting quarterback on Thursday as the Bears are expected to play their starters into the third quarter. “I think I’ve continued to get better in the preseason, so this will be another step to take.” Orton said, “We’ll get a lot more playing time this week and just try to get ready for Indianapolis (season opener).” Orton was just barely better than Grossman in the first two preseason games. His quarterback rating was 63.2 compared to Grossman’s 56.5. Those numbers tell you how poorly the quarterbacks in Chicago really have been in recent seasons.
SBG Global Current Line: Bears - 3 , Total 37
While the Bears have settled on a starting quarterback heading into Thursday’s game, the 49ers have not. Head coach Mike Nolan said that all three quarterbacks will get a similar amount of playing time on Thursday with J.T. O’Sullivan starting followed by Alex Smith and Shaun Hill. “The quarterback rotation will be the same for Chicago on Thursday. We have a short week to prepare, and I want to keep the team focused on the Bears,” said Nolan. “The starters will most likely play the first half, with the second unit coming in during the third quarter.”
NFL betting stats show that the two teams have met in preseason action the last three years with the Bears winning two of the three games including both home games. Two of the three games went over the total. The teams have met four times since 2001 in regular season play with Chicago winning four of the five matchups.

Has there ever been a more disappointing 18-1 team in NFL history? The New England Patriots lost the only game that counted, the Superbowl against the NY Giants. The Patriots will bring back their record setting offense again this season. There main concern is there offensive line, as every team in the league saw how to beat the Patriots in the Superbowl by getting to Brady. The records of Tom Brady and the offense are widely-known, Brady's 50 TDs, Moss’ 23 or Moss and Welker combining for 210 catches. They ranked at the top last year, 589 points, scoring at least 31 points in 12 of 16 regular season games.
Tom Brady had a high ankle sprain coming into the Superbowl and he just wasn't himself in Superbowl XLII. He would never admit to it. He is back now and fully healed so the NFL is once again going to have to get out of his way. You can't convince Pats fans there's a better quarterback in the NFL. Brady has yet to miss a start after taking over for Drew Bledsoe three games into the 2001 season. New England is not going to go undefeated again this season. They actually have a lot of games on their schedule where teams are out for revenge on them. They play at San Diego, at Indianapolis and a home game with Pittsburgh. Also there divisional rivals NY Jets are getting better by picking up Brett Favre and they have to play them twice. This is talented team which finished number #1 last year in offense. They will probably win the AFC East title once again for the third straight year. My prediction is they will have 13 wins on the season going over the total for season wins. The oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com currently have New England Patriots over 12 -175 NFL Regular Season Wins. View "GlenMcNeil" sports picks now! Bill Parcells has done it four times before. Can he do it again? Lets discuss the Miami Dolphins AFC east 2008 Regular Season Wins. Last season Miami went 1-15 on the season and needed overtime score to keep them from going winless. Parcells has turned around four other teams to make the playoffs in the past and he is going to try to do it again with Miami in 2008. They need to improve at quarterback and until then they really have no shot at winning the division or even making the playoffs.
Offensive lineman Jake Long was the number one pick for Miami this year and already they signed him to a big contract. The Michigan left tackle was signed to a five year NFL contract worth $30 million guaranteed. Long's total contract package is worth $57.75 million. This NFL contract will make Jake Long the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL. Miami has three quarterbacks fighting for the starting job this year, Josh McCown, John Beck and rookie Chad Henne. McCown is veteran insurance in case the young QB's aren't ready to lead. McCown has had mixed results in his 31 career starts with Arizona and Oakland. He is basically a short term fix at quarterback. For Beck it is his job to lose, with Miami drafting and making trades for some offensive lineman this should help him relax in the pocket and cure those fumbles he had last year. Henne is out of Michigan, Parcells thinks he could be the quarterback of the future for the team and is really high on him. They have to play some tough games in their division with the Jets and Buffalo improving. This is officially rebuilding for Miami so don't expect much from them. They are going to win more than one game like they did last season, so that would be a step forward. My predication is they could win 4 or 5 games so that would stay under the total from the lines makers. The Bears are 0-2 entering game three of the preseason. They have lost to Kansas City in the opening game 24-20 and Seattle last week 29-26. The good news is they were in all these games, and last week's game against Seattle they lost in overtime. QB Grossman started the game off going completed 9 of 15 passes with one interception. He is still fighting for the starting job this year. Grossman could have had a 66 yard touchdown pass to Earl Bennett in the second series of the game, but he lofted the pass down the hashmarks, and it was knocked down by a defensive back. He has been in the league for a long time now and his reads on offense are still terrible. 'This will be my fifth year with this coaching staff. They've seen me for four years,' Grossman said, with a cut below the bridge of his nose and a gauze wrap over his bruised throwing forearm. 'I think they should know about me.' he said. The Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com currently have Chicago Bears -3 favorites to San Francisco with the total at 37.
Grossman is still not sure if he will be the starter in the opening season game against Indianapolis. He is still fighting for his job with Kyle Orton, in two series, he looked pretty damn comfortable. The offensive line for the Bears is a major concern coming into the next two preseason games. The Bears need to develop a consistent screen game to counter the blitz packages. Bears coach Lovie Smith acknowledged he'd like to settle on a starter as soon as possible, with two preseason games remaining. San Francisco is 1-1 in the preseason coming into this matchup. They lost the opener 18-6 at Oakland then came home to blow out Green Bay 34-6 on Saturday night. QB O'Sullivan threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Josh Morgan and outplayed top competitor Alex Smith. Let's not give Smith the starting job just yet. O'Sullivan is taking some strides towards winning the position, he's making some great throws and scoring points. 'I'm going out there to try to play quarterback as well as I can and let it go from there,' O'Sullivan said. 'Unfortunately I don't get to make the decision.' Alex Smith still looks a step behind. He’s not pulling the trigger. He’s still waiting for his guy to be wide open, and for that extra second to read the coverage before he releases the ball. O'Sullivan hit Morgan for the long score on the next drive and finished 8-for-17 for 154 yards with the touchdown and interception. Looking at this matchup and seeing both teams who don't know who their starting QB will be yet and you have two guys fighting for the job on both teams, you have to think that there will be points scored in this matchup and if I had to bet the game then over the total probably would be the best call here.
